I only drove a manual once and that was back in Iraq 2005. I taught myself to drive an Iraqi jeep we had at camp. Used to drive it around. That was so long ago though. Maybe it will come back to me.

Schneider is in the process over the next three years of turning over their entire fleet autos so even if you start in the next couple of months as a solo you could be in a manual transmission for a good year or so at least

Although Schneider is now getting new trucks w/ auto trans, the majority of the fleet is 10 speed manual. Most new drivers fresh out of school get an older truck as they expect it will get dinged up a bit.

if you start out in bulk you will likely get a 10 speed. i transferred to a different division, but they didn't have many auto trucks when i was there and the ones they did get went to the guys who were there for more than a year.

I'd like to see a source on "shifting errors" being the #2 cause of accidents. I'm not saying it isn't true, but I've been in this business awhile now and I've never heard of any such thing. Please provide a link that can substantiate this claim.

A simple search on Bing.com came up with the information below.

    Why I wrote it:
It was an indirect quote from class.

Internet search result for: "truck accident causes"

I pulled this from a page...
(The bold part was the first bullet point.)

Truck Accidents Caused by Commercial Truck Drivers Big rig and other commercial truck drivers are skilled and patient drivers, for the most part. However, in addition to the dangers inherent in the size and weight of the trucks used in commercial transportation and shipping, a number of characteristics inherent in the business can contribute to traffic accidents. These include: Inadequate training as to driving technique, safety concerns, and defensive driving. Systems of compensation that encourage faster vehicle speeds and more hours of consecutive vehicle operation than would normally be advisable. Unrealistic schedules and expectations of trucking companies that encourage drivers to hurry, despite safety risks involved.

I don't see anything about shifting gears causing accidents. Also, that website is an advertisement for a law firm trying to recruit plaintiffs in personal injury lawsuits against trucking companies. lol. Not a credible source.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, I'm just saying that in my 7 years as a professional driver I've never heard of an accident being caused by a shifting error and I've never heard of it being mentioned as a safety liability by anyone. I'd say that whoever said that, in whatever class you were in, was likely making stuff up in order to justify the "benefits" of auto shifts or simply trying to sound intelligent. I'm pretty sure you're a new driver and you will learn that truckers have a tendency to tell creative tales. It's often a good idea to research dubious-sounding claims before repeating them as fact. For example, anything that you hear about US Marshals in regard to trucking is likely untrue as well.
