Should "certified" scales at the smaller truck stops be trusted? Anybody have any experience with them being way off? I prefer not to have to drive farther to the TA/Petro cluster f in Ontario.

I think for the most part, they can be reasonably trusted to keep you out of trouble, especially if they indicate "certified", you can be reasonably sure the state comes out at some point to verify calibration. There are a few independent scales down in southern LA and orange counties that are "safe"
JC1971 Thanks this. -

I've never had any issues with an accurate weight.

Never had an issue. I've always used whichever makes sense for the load I'm doing. Cat scale or otherwise.

Certified is certified. I believe they get calibrated at least once a year.

If your running close to 80k, cat scale.
If under 70k, any scale should give you an ideal weight. -
I've used scales other than cat and never had a problem

CAT scales offer a guarantee that they will back you up in court. I don't think any other scale company out there does that.

When I load in Nogales, I always use that certified scale in that parking lot next to the pilot in order to avoid the cluster #### that is that pilot.
