I just wander why do you have to double clutch the gears in truck school
when my instructor tells me you wont do this in the real world? It took me a minute to grasp it thank god I can do it now and got pretty dang good at it, but when im with my instructor he never touches that clutch only when starting and stopping. do I have to double or can i float like him?

The truck school guys say the manufacturers recomend double-clutching. If you get the chance, learn how to float.

Float is the easiest way, and is easier on the clutch, but if you believe the manufacturers, no one should ever float the gears.

I have gotten good enough to catch them on the way down, but it's harder with a N-14. The Detroit 14 is a very easy motor to float the gears with.

You must double clutch in school and on your road test to get your cdl. After you get on with an company you will have to listen to your trainer once you get your own truck you may do what you want. I float most of the time my trainer told me that we do not double clutch in his truck unless we have to.

The cluth is there to take punishment as it were. Clutch replacement is minor compared to more serious damage cause by forcing shifts without it's benefit. Now having said that, the main reason for floating is because often times rpm's fall to quickly, especially for rookies when they're trying to double clutch under load. Shifting takes practice, even old hands miss a gear sometimes. So for those starting out, for a equipment protection standpoint, d/c'n might be the way to go. But as soon as ya get the hang of it, skip the crutch... I mean clutch, and join the ranks of the pro's.

Of course I could be wrong ...

I agree except I don't think floating means you're a professional!! The concept is to know what gear to be in at any given time. If you can hit those gears without banging then go for it. And when I say banging that doesn't mean grinding or rubbing it means a bang. It won't happen very often but when it does that when the damage occurs. And it's usually when you're under a heavy load. So I believe every new driver should learn how to double clutch then when he or she KNOWS the truck they can shift any way they choose to take care of that equipment.

Our school only taught us how to float gears---
CDL test I floated the whole time and passed.
Now the company truck Im in has an auto shift with a clutch pedal thats used only for starting or stopping.

I say just learn how to float em... don't shove it in gear ever. When the rpm and road speed is correct the lever will slide in with a minimal amount of pressure.

I even float gears some times on my pickup at home and my Vw bus.

Well why not float? as new driver you going to grind gears... If you miss a shift while double clutching your going to hear a grind.. With a missed gear while floating you can get a load clunk that seriously can tear crap up.. Thats why you should start with double clutching till you get the shift timings down VERY well then practice floating....
