Some companies have an extra line in the log called Line 5 which is Off Duty Driving. Most company drivers are forced to use Line 3 when ever the truck is in motion though.
Logging off the system and driving the truck is not recommended because the unit still records odometer miles and movement. That time and distance will have to be reconciled when you log back into the system, if you falsify and choose 'NO' for the time/distance reconciliation you can get in big trouble.

Love paper logs.
scottied67 Thanks this. -
if you are bob tail and not under dispatch you should be able to log off duty driving personal conveyance. I used this at my old company on e-log to go from terminal to truck stop during my 10 hour break.

As a company driver I don't have the option of an off duty driving line, only the L/O and O/O drivers have that.
That is what you need to run around town in your off duty time.
It isn't that big of a deal.
If I need to drive the truck while on home time I plan it that way.
I plan it to do those things on the first day of home time so I can get that 34 to reset my hours before I come back on duty.
We all work within the system under which we are operating. -
As soon as I started driving I had QC messages and a phone call to ask why my truck was moving with no one signed in.
Make no mistake, they know EXACTLY where that truck is at any given moment.
If it is being driven 'illegally' they will know.
I said sorry, they said OK and added that time onto my logs - which I did also to keep everything kosher.
But, never again.
I can't do that here.
And I'm fine with that.
I can use any system to its full potential, and to my own advantage within that system.
But I have certain rules that I must abide by within that system. This is one of them.Toomanybikes and Pmracing Thank this. -

Those drivers are struggling as well, maybe even more.
It is no big deal to me to be working within a system that I understand and can deal with.
I don't need to find 'greener pastures'. -

It makes no sense to me.
