Hello there. I've recently acquired my class A learner's permit with air brakes and combo endorcements. I'm taking a class to learn how to drive where the instructor comes to my company and we use our trucks and trailers. My question is: Can I have cargo (haul a load) in my trailer while practicing driving? We have only 1 empty trailer here and the other has cargo usually stored on it. The instructor said we're not allowed to drive on the road with a load since we only have a permit but I can't find that rule anywhere and I want to call BS. How the hell am I supposed to learn how to drive a truck when all I drive is an empty one? Please give me some insight and documentation so I can be proved wrong or prove the instructor wrong. Thank you.

That's a good question, although I've always thought CDL training should include both empty trailers, and a short time with "dummy loads", empty trailers filled with low-profile heavy freight that cannot shift. Think plate steel welded or bolted to the floor.....

But you don't know of any actual rules saying if you can or can't haul a load?

No, I don't. But I agree with you, that pulling loaded trailers would improve your training.

Depends on the insurance carrier, so this would be very company specific.

Master an empty trailer and prove you can control and drive an empty trailer. Then maybe address one with freight asummimg like previous poster stayed about insurance allowances. Don't get hung up on such a minor issue.

    Friday and Wakum6 Thank this.

To the best of my knowledge there are no rules prohibiting a student driving a loaded truck. However I would never allow it if it were my customers load. I'm sorry but there is too serious a chance of a student shaking a trailer by running into a ditch etc etc. Also dealing with shippers and receiver's and other things around a dock outside of using an abandoned dock for your backing is something that really needs to wait till the average student has got that class A and is with a trainer. At least this Is my opinion.

I completely agree with you. My company doesn't actually haul freight for commerce. I'm government and we have equipment strapped down to flat beds. I'm just curious about the specific laws.

I was able to carry a load I just wasn't able to have a loaded tanker with the tanker endorsement. That was in Indiana though. Best bet would be to just call the license branch.

Schneider in green Bay use a loaded trailer for training. Just a bunch of crap inside and not that heavy.

C.R England put 2 students in a truck and sent them off, but they have a waiver...
