I started the academy 2 weeks ago.
So far passed both weeks.
This consisted of passing:
Straight Line Backing
Pre trip
Air Brake Test
In Cab inspection
Side sight and blind side parallel
Offset backing
I passed all the backing without any points and a 92 on pre trip
Im still nervous tho
For one, We've only been on the road to drive once, and that was to introduce us to it and how to shift gears(which I did pretty good on, especially for my first time)
Even still tho, Im nervous
Week 3, which starts tomorrow on Sunday is susposed to introduce us to driving on the road and more shifting practice, but I just dont think that is enough time until Friday to pass a DPS road test.
FYI the road test is in Waco Texas.
Heres where I feel I struggle at:
Set up
I have trouble getting the trailer perfectly straight and aligned with the neighboring cones, idk why. When my set up is good, I can back up pretty us. Thing is, I might set up good like once every 10 times.
Second thing is, well I just only drove on the road in a big truck, once and that was a few days ago.
I just dont think ima be ready by Friday.
Any pointers, how hard are these road test usually?
DMV road test Friday. Nervous as hell dont think im ready.

Relax, the DMV people know you're a student and you're not going to drive or back up like us pros.
And you can always take the test again if you mess up.
Hopefully you'll pass and get a good trainer to teach you more so that you'll be ready when you get your own truck.
I passed it the first time, it was awesome. Yet there were others there that I thought seemed smarter than me and they failed it 4 or 5 times.
Good luckDominick253, Friday and Xzay Thank this. -
The week will be plenty of time to get you feeling more confident.
Relax - you'll be fine.Dominick253, tucker and Xzay Thank this. -
I got my CDL A here in Memphis 2 weeks ago. I was nervous and messed a thing or 2 up. Something I wouldn't normally do. For example my blind side parallel, I nailed it practicing that morning at the school. No pull ups. No get outs. All 3 times I did it. Go to test and jacked it all up, got out 2 times and pulled up 2 times. But I only had those 2 each. I wasn't in straight. I pulled up about 5 ft to get straight for the 3rd time. I thought I failed. He said I didn't because I had plenty of points to spare. In my pretrip I couldn't for the life of me remember valve stem. I said "oh man, what's that called? It has to be metal with a metal cap. You put air in it. Ahhhh." The examiner said valve stem what's next lol. My first job was changing tires when I was 14 at my dad's mechanic shop. So it is going to happen. They know it. And usually will give you the benefit of the doubt. They know when you know your stuff and when you don't. Be confident. Do your best and good luck!

Based on my experience at school, 4 or 5 good driving sessions of an hour each or so should get you comfortable enough to pass the test. That's all you're doing at school, is just knowing enough to pass. Like the school told us, they're just teaching us enough to get us killed. The real training will be out on the road at the carrier with your trainer. Remember your traffic checks, look left-right-left as you're going through each intersection.

I'm not even sure I could pass the test any more

There was a driver for a certain company taking the driving test when our class went through the testing. He came to the part of the test where he was suppose to back on a straight line. He pulled up to get the truck straight and then decided to GOAL. Unfortunately, he failed to set his brakes and the truck rolled down the hill across a road and into a pond. It was then that I realized the meaning of the phrase "Swift Move".

It is easy. Too easy. Relax. I took my test in Texas at waxahachie last year and passed with a 94 I think. No bs I had never driven a tractor trailer in my life until about 8 hours before the test. I had driven non CDL dump trucks and pickups with long goosenecks but never a tractor trailer. I did about thirty minutes of practice driving a few hours before I took the test and I did it no problems. I lost virtually all my points on the parallel park.

As for Xzay, just relax and do the best you can. If you do happen to fail, don't sweat it and just keep practicing at the range until you're comfortable. Can you tell us which academy you're with? -
My concern is I don't feel like I'm getting the right practice with driving. Am I getting hours and experience on a decent road? Yes. The problem is our instructor wants us to go from 9th then stop all the way to 4th gear at literally every stop.
I see his reason for doing this, but at the same time, as a new driver it causes alot of us to mess up, since alot of us cant down shift that fast. Me personally I would rather hit a turn at around 6th or 7th gear, then drive on the road on 8th and 9th. Seems more simple that way. But o well.
