The carriers actually are moving to autos because they cost a LOT less to maintain. Drivers can't destroy a clutch or grenade a transmission as easily. In a fleet of hundreds or thousands, that savings really adds up.

    #### I guess I should feel good then, I bought a truck with a super 10 and taught myself to drive it, then took the CDL test in it. In KY you have to double clutch and skipping gears isn't allowed up or down. It sucked but at least with a super 10 that's half the double clutching of a straight 10

Don't you have to clutch on split downshifts with the super 10?

No. Eaton says not to double clutch during splits and the KY CDL manual also said it.

Funny. The Super 10 that I drove in school sometimes wouldn't downshift on the split until the clutch was disengaged.

That's weird I wonder if that was some extra safety BS they installed. The way I understood it was that you could use the clutch for the splitter shift but it was optional(single clutch press not double). Notice in this video the guy doesn't press the clutch for the 5/6, 7/8 or 9/10 shift.

I dunno. It was an 80's vintage White/Volvo. Seemed when downshifting on the split, it didn't like to go in until you single clutched after matching RPM / road speed.

Probably had to do with poor maintenance and worn out. Training schools aren't exactly well known for having good equipment.
