I don't believe for a second "its a training tool theory." Sure, that sounds legit, but it is pure BS. For example if you got some one as stupid as that tanker driver watching porn while driving, just how do you make inroads in training that fool. That is just too stupid to be helped.
The truth is the cameras have been available for years and they haven't started making inroads until recently. That is because most new trucks have critical event sensors along with stability control. While this stuff has been out before, it has never been more sensitive and less discriminatory in its warnings. The big problem is all the desk jockeys do not know how this technology works let alone how to drive a truck. As such they are ignorant to the fact a lot of these so-called critical events are not at all critical and just a part of normal truck driving. With these event sensors giving off warnings every time they see the trucks shadow, a lot of these companies have dismissed drivers unjustly for these non "safety events." This in cab camera is an attempt to provide a reason for these 'critical events."
In the end it just another tool for micromanagement. These mega companies all micromanage their drivers in the first place, and this camera gives the desk jockeys another excuse for their own useless existence.Last edited: Aug 15, 2016

Look at Driver Cams from perspective of trucking co. lawyer in court. Plaintiff lawyer (ambulance chaser?) tells jury or judge the trucking company has the ability to show what their employee was doing just before this accident, an accident that ruined my client's ability to win a Nobel Prize, and the company chose not to install that driver cam. Obviously they accept bad behavior of their drivers & that's why they didn't want it on video.
Trucking companies essentially have to prove to juries & ambulance chasers they have done everything reasonable to monitor their employees & equipment. As technology advances more thing become possible & then reasonable. When 1 trucking company installs technology that technology quickly is declared "reasonable".scottied67 Thanks this. -
Unless I missed a major change in the systems, they can't just "turn it on and watch you" whenever they feel like it. The cameras record over themselves in a continuous loop format, but when an event is triggered by G forces, THEN it saves that data, usually from10 seconds before to 10 seconds after the event. Then supervisors review these clips after they are downloaded, 95% of which result in no action anyway because it was a bad bump, our wonderful highways, some dolt cutting you off, etc. But, if you are texting, nose picking, etc AND an event is triggered, then you can be in trouble. But still best bet is to be smart and be safe all the time. Maybe there are newer 24/7 pervert cams out there now, IDK.

I have read a few reports from drivers with the cams saying most of the time the little light on the driver facing cam is green meaning it is only recording in 10 second loops and will go red if they hit the brakes too hard (trigger).
Then sometimes they will see the light go red at random times meaning the 10 second file is being saved/uploaded back to headquarters even though the driver did not trigger any event. So yes they can and will record any time they want and watch you very close to real time any time they want.
Driver dropped his trailer in the dock and pulled ahead 3 feet, did not have seatbelt on and was written up for that, 2 more strikes like that and will be fired.Toomanybikes and Hick Thank this. -
Look at the DriveCam PDF below... right under the image header it tells you that they can be remotely activated:

The current generation of cameras can save 3-5 days of ALL most recent "truck moving" video. If they get a call-in from a motorist on Monday morning about, say, aggressive driving that occurred the Friday before, at around 14:30, they can request that half hour before and after 14:30 ... It's there and available in HD, with sound.
Critical events are saved and sent seperate. Also with some systems, the driver can "flag" an event manually and call the company to retrieve it. -
unprofessional, watching porn while driving anyhow. Probably texted while driving as well. Stupid.
What the hell is next? What, we can't even watch a nice set of seat-cover drive past us, while not looking down for a second or two? Oh well, in ten years or less a robot will be driving rigs, not men.
Man, this industry is messed up, right along with this BIG BROTHER mentality. Thankfully I will be OUT in a couple more years. Y'all can keep your auto-#### transmissions, and your spy cameras.Toomanybikes Thanks this. -
For the lights there are three modes, all green means it's working. Blinking red and green means it's saving an event. All red is where most get confused, as most seem to think it is recording. It's not, the pamphlet states red is simply normal operation, but has a video waiting to upload.
This PDF is an example of tunnel vision. Someone sees what they want and misinterprets what they see. Yes it has the word remote in the PDF, but if you continue reading on page 17 it says the remote is simply a remote button to manually trigger the recording.
As for the seat belt warning, yea it's a bit much but I've heard so many outright lies about the cameras I wonder if it's true. If it is, that place is so micromanaged I would not want to work there anyway...
Lastly, before people accuse me of liking the cameras, I don't. I just hate misinformation much, much more. There are plenty of reasons to hate theses things, we don't need to muddy the waters with bad info and lies.
