22 w/ 40k saved... what do I do with my life?

I was one of those guys, my base was $150K, plus bonuses, which usually took me close to $190K. In my case the H1B Visa holder is making $60K a year, no benefits, they called it a resource action, and the H1B Visa stated it was a shareholder value add, it was a bean counter decision, my management had no idea they were being hit until it happened.
I am now classified by the unemployment office as "High risk for long term unemployment". The reason is I am overqualified for most IT positions because of my experience, and because I don't hold a degree, which is required by most corporations for a position that matches my skill set.
I am not the only one in this predicament. Disney, Tata Consulting, InfoSys, as well as some other brand names are being sued by laid off employees for violating the H1B Visa laws and importing labor. Those ex-IT workers who are part of the litigation have been told, you will never work in IT again. I would not be surprised if some of them are on here. I wish the best of luck to your friends, but I hope they have a plan B if it happens to them. I am drawing a salary until March 2017, as well as full benefits. I was 1 of 10,000 the day I was told, and there was not even a mention on the evening news, but neither was the 12,000 from March.

 

One does pretty much nothing but freelance. The other moves around a lot. Currently with Bank Of America last we talked. Though I have not talked to him in over a year.

I know the oilfield isn't lasting forever but show me a 23 y/o that can do 1700+ a wk in another industry. And my company is about as shady as you can get. Didn't even make me take a wizz quiz, like wtf. I have one foot out the door already. Saving up for a pre 2000, pay cash for it and either reef or get into heavy/specialized stuff. Most of what we move is overweight frac equipment. Haven't run into dot yet but thank god for loose leaf and 5th line.

Even if I go back to my old company delivering food in nyc with a 48 im still looking at upper 60's for 55- 60 hours a week in my own bed at night. 2 driver run 3x a week, hard to beat in my neck of the woods, 5 min from the house. Only positive is after 7yr your fully vested, they put in 16% of your pre tax earnings into an account for you. Employee owned comp. Top guys doing 90k/yr plus 16% on top of 90k

Most young men today have no idea how this country came to be so great, work sun up to sun down just to survive. My 20 y/o brother is one of em. Love him to death hes my best bud. No work ethic at all. I played sports year round in my youth, he played video games and never went outside. This right here is the root of all our issues. Men not being men, simple as that. There are many people with computer-related college degrees not working in the field. Intermodal trucking is typically done with "beater trucks" and you hustle all day for short runs.

You sound like you have a good shot at quickly making a fleet work very well. I'd suggest keep doing what you've been doing. It's obviously working.
