Pete you do limit your loads. And you would have to put in a LOT of legwork at first. But if you are just going to run coils around the Ohio valley you would be fine. I just hate coils. Just remember thus this is a flatbed company not a Conestoga Co.

Once you get agents that know you it gets real easy Being as you tend to work a smaller area I would suggest calling and talking to your local agents. some agent have loads but don't post them. Some agents have 0 freight. I usually get calls now about loads. But I had to (and still have to) make a lot of calls to ensure I'm staying in good lanes. Also if I could do it again I would have got a 53' trailer. it would open almost all that freight back up for you.

Recruiting sure is pushing those van.

Ronald said mercer won't let you do flat without recent experience anymore. Is this true? o_O

If mercer recruiting said it, it's true. But that doesn't mean it's going to stay that way. Winter is almost here, it makes sense they get a little stricter on hiring standards right before the slow season kicks in. See what they say when the spring boom is gearing up.

Personally i would love to see mercer go back to their hiring standards of 15 years ago, even if it would mean i gotta learn to paint.

It isn't a rental. It's a lease purchase. And are you sure he wasnt saying that's the price for a flat? You have to have a trailer here flat, van, rgn, doesnt matter but you gotta have one.

He said " If you dont own a trailer, we can rent you one." plus 3 cent per after 10k miles. like I said I sounded like he was pushing vans. also they might let you switch to flat after 6 mo.

    .03¢ after 10k miles???

Never heard that one before. Heck $585 seems different too but I won't swear to that. Inflation I guess?? No escrow?

Things do evolve around here and that is why recruiting has the answers and not us. I mean I started here with my only flat experience being I had thrown a strap over a PODS container. I wouldn't call that experience at all. But I came here almost two years ago and can't tell you how many changes I have seen.

I would make a list and ask your recruiter VERY specific questions. If you want to go flat I'm sure it can happen.

Are you sure you were talking to a mercer recruiter and not some third party recruiting service? None of that matches up to anything i have seen or heard here.

And while its quite possible changes have been made, i find it unlikely i haven't heard of these changes or seen anyone discussing them. And everything gets discussed (argued) on Facebook.
