    Ok, Here's the story.

3 lane highway. Trucks prohibited in left lane. Morning rush hour traffic. Speed Limit 65.

I'm in center lane going 65-67 mph. Semi in front of me at same speed for several miles. He slows down to like 60. Don't know why exactly. I get impatient. Right lane is bogged down even worse due to a merge, however, left lane is wide open. Hmm..So I decide to go in left lane figuring I'll floor it to 70(my limit) and I'll pass this truck within a quarter mile and come back over…..Well, Epic Fail..! Truck that I was trying to pass re-accelerated to not only 65-67 which he was doing but to 70. I’m guessing a vehicle had initially slowed him down and either moved over to right lane or sped up. Anyway I now find myself going 70 mph side by side with that truck, stuck in the truck prohibited left lane. Dang it.. Vehicles have quickly lined up behind me. Center lane looks pretty full too; I would have to brake and slow down considerably to get back over. (that was a last resort decision) Then, it looked like a minivan in front of truck I'm looking to pass may be going a bit slower. Good I'll wait a moment for that to happen then move out of left lane to center in front of minivan. Crap! Nope! minivan doing 70 too. Truck beside me maintains speed im driving in(70). he's like 40 feet ahead and holding. this continues for another mile Now I'm kinda panicking because I’m not liking being in the prohibited lane for as long as I am. Ok Now the semi isn't the problem in this story, Yes, I’m annoyed that he sped up and sped up to over his 67 he was doing, but..*Sigh*.. he was within his right, just unfortunate timing.

The Problem.,,, I see a "4 wheeler" whip into center lane from the far right lane in front of other truck beside me. He pauses with a quick brake for a millisecond and then moves quickly in front of me, but instead of speeding away, he "Brake Checks" me and slows down to like 63 all the while lighting up his brake lights (brake checking). And, of course, I had to quickly slow down to the same speed (but I still maintained my lane because center was still relatively full). I immediately know exactly what he's doing. I've seen this kind of thing before against another trucker.. He's mad that I was in the left lane and never should have been there. Didn’t matter that I was going 70 in a 65, he apparently wanted to do faster than that and couldn't. Only thing is after he brake checked me, he didn't speed away like I expected. He stayed ahead of me doing 62/63 and continued his brake checking. I thought ok buddy you already made your point, now go away but he didn’t go away… So I throw my highbeams on and continuously blow my horn. Got No response from him. He didn’t speed away or slow down or change lanes. Nothing.. After like 30 seconds, I see the center lane open up and just move out of the left lane. I think to myself “You win buddy, just Go on and leave me alone. I'm sorry I was there in the first place”

....Only thing is...He also changed to center lane in front of me still doing his same speed and brake checking me...Although I was no longer blasting my horn, I still had my Highbeams on. Was just about to click them off when I moved over but since he moved over too I kept them on for spite. His little brake checking charade continued for like another 30 seconds and that's when I thought maybe this isn't road rage that ,maybe, he was an off duty law enforcement officer or something like that and he was just moving me over but now because I was a little defiant with my highbeams and horn, maybe he was gonna "Call me in" I didn't want any flashing blue/red lights behind me....So I decided to give in to him once again and just turn my brights off, maintain the 63 mph speed, and not antagonize him, (although I think he deserved something for following me over) After another, say 30 seconds, seeing that I was "behaving" or, perhaps, felt he taught me his lesson, He moved over to left lane and sped away. (in his late model 4 door tan Toyota Camry, by the way,and not a Crown Vic or similar police-like vehicle make)

Yes, I know, I never should have been in that lane to begin with....My Bad.... Lesson Learned..

What do you guys make of this guy? Was just someone road raging? or was he an off duty law enforcement-type or was he just someone who thought he take it upon himself to "police" the highway?

I know Brake Checking which is often done to a Tailgater, is Illegal because it's very dangerous to do to someone...but a Policeman in his marked vehicle under certain circumstances may have authority to do it ...... but would an off duty type law-enforcement person do that....It seemed like he has done this before, perhaps, because my little defiance(brights/Horn) did not faze the guy one bit...

    Opinion?

My opinion is that whoever is obstructing the traffic flow is a complete Vulva.

This is the most important thing when trucking. Be as actively defensive as possible. Space is best thing to have between you and "them".

When I get stuck in the left lane because I've been kind enough to let someone merge into the interstate and they attempt to hang me out to dry I drop a gear and get behind them. I don't have time for their nonsense and I'm not going to attempt to cut across their bumper. You get these billly bigriggers types that don't move for anyone and think they own the lane their in. You sit there for miles and then when you think you have given them enough space. You move over, they get all pissy and blow past faster than you passed them. Because despite thinking you gave them enough space they decided to keep accelerating.

Keep that left lane flowing because it's your best out. Don't keep Mr.Beat up truck and trailer there so he merges in front of you 4 feet off your bumper or loses a retread and hits you. You see these ding dongs tailgating in the tightest pack on I-78 into NJ and when there's a emergency vehicle on the shoulder all hell breaks lose because no one has a out.

Traffic will react by letting you back into the right lane. Your clearly getting out of the way so they can pass, they are impatient and they'll figure it out, the right lane will clear out. The turd in the car was being a turd nothing you can do about it but put distance between you and him. An seriously consider getting a dash cam. If they mess up, you have evidence and if you do find a new place for the camera.

    Hmm...

Every trucker who has a lick of experience has been in a similar situation.

    What would I have done?

Probably changed my mind about passing him and put on my turn signal to get behind trucker. Admitting defeat in this situation would help you. What would this accomplish?

    1) Resume traffic flow

    2) Gets the negative attention away from you

    3) Gets you to be in relaxed position in a heavy traffic situation.

Getting there 2 minutes quicker isn't going to make a difference.

If you have to go 60mph for a few minutes, so what?

People are in such a hurry these days.

When it comes to douchebags like the guy in the 4 wheeler you mentioned, I just ignore those people. There is nothing you can do but ignore. Do I get mad about it? Well sure, but expressing your anger in that situation does absolutely nothing but make a bad situation worse. You're driving a machine that can easily kill someone, and it wouldn't matter whose fault it was. The only thing that should be on your mind is getting through the heavy traffic safely and moving on. No emotions, just get through it, whether it be 65mph or 55mph. Nothing you can do about it.

We can't sit there and worry about our time, worry about getting where we're going as fast as possible - do the best you can do, drive an appropriate speed for whatever conditions you're in, and to hell with the consequences. But the consequences will be a LOT worse if someone ends up dead because you couldn't control your emotions, or you couldn't be a little more patient because you wanted to get there 2 minutes quicker, or you wanted to get to the red light before everybody else. Whether you're driving a 4 wheeler or 10 or 18.

    Stupid. Just plain stupid.

People these days are in such a hurry to go nowhere.

He must had been really upset with you.Like others already mentioned I would simply put on right blinker and took foot of the gas pedal.4 wheelers on the right would let you in.
I can kind of understand that dude up to a degree.I too get pissed sometimes at unconsiderate drivers.2 weeks ago, leaving Omaha NE speed limit 75 mph,3 lanes, slow trucks in the right lane,I am in the middle doing 75 and suddenly in front of me punk from Schneider doing 60.
Made me mad.Passed him in the left lane, looked at him while passing,he looked very relaxed doing 60 in middle lane, too much relaxed for my liking. So,I got in front of him and "brake check buddy" down to 50,then another down to 40 (minimum speed limit).
Was doing 40 in front of him for maybe 20 -30 sec, made my point and sped up.Hate this kind of a holes.I won't get even slightly upset if you doing 25 mph in right lane and I am behind you because maybe for some reason you have to but if you in the middle lane which for trucks is often hammer lane do at least freaking speed limit!

Understanding why a four wheeler may have been upset about something is one thing. Brake checking is another, especially as a professional driver; we are held to a higher standard. As long as it's legal to do so, feel free to pass from the inside lane, more power to you. But a slow driver in the middle lane does not justify your brake checking him. Once you passed him, you should have gone along your merry way, perhaps berating him on the radio as you pulled away, instead of creating a potentially hazardous situation.

I was trying to educate him about being so slow in trucks hammer lane. And besides it's not legal!Did you notice "Slow traffic keep right" signs?Unfortunately it's rarely enforced.
And like I said inside lane was taken by slow trucks drivers who understand that not everyone is governed at 62.
