I'm told I'll need to purchase a GPS. I'll be getting an atlas as well.

Are there certain brands that come recommended for driving a truck?

    Thanks in advance.

Any GPS will work.I had a Wal-Mart GPS and only used it when I was close to the shipper and receiver so I wouldn't miss my turn. But your main tool is the truckers atlas that can be purchased at most Truckstops. It has low bridges,no trk routes weigh stations all kinds of information you'll need to know with every trip.

Yes but which one? The TND 80, 70, 730, 530lm, or the 525?

    Get a Garmin.

It is better than Rand, it has better support and it is made by the company that makes Navigation units for the military and the airlines industry.

The Rand McNally trucker's atlas is your best friend, as a prior respondent stated.

Aside from that, I use a very large screen Android phone with Google maps to check and confirm the final few turns.

It's always helpful to have a good contact number for both shipper and receiver.

Use the Garmin. They are out of Olathe KS.

Also their support is out of Olathe KS:) No speaking to some call center in India while some 15yo reads through a trouble shooting manual.

I had one and loved it until some broke into my truck at the FlyingJ in indy about 2 years ago, I haven't bought one ever since. But you are right, Rand McNally's are good.

Looks like the tnd 510 is N Out of production model and it looks like most of them for sale or either used or refurbished.

Looks like I can get a tnd 70 for between $430 to $450.
A comprable Garmin seems to go for around $50 more
