If you ask how successful they are I hope they tell you how much money they pay themselves and how many miles they run. I guy I knew is still at Landstar. He would tell you he is successful and happy. He has a new big 780 Volvo and is own trailer. What if does not say is how he lives in his truck and does not have a house or apartment to go home to. I could not afford to keep driving for Landstar and keep truck repairs and keep paying for my house. So I went back to driving company truck and keep my house.
Maybe it different for other Landstar drivers but I am making $20,000 more a year driving a company truck. I don't have to worry about loads canceling and fighting for loads because when agents post load that pay decent they will only be on the load board 30 seconds. -
Build a good relationship with a few and a good reputation for yourself and they'll be calling you.
This is just a basic fundamental of working at landstar.noluck, spyder7723, Dominion Transportation and 7 others Thank this. -
Op thought he'd buy 10k truck, pull LS trailer and strike it rich.
steelcitytrucka Thanks this. -
I think Landstar used to say only 35% of the loads are on the load board. So if your running the load board your probably pulling the cheapest freight they have. I had agents tell me call them back when I get into the area to see if they had load.
Their is agent in Nogales AZ you won't ever see his loads and he like 4 million dollars loads year agent. It's very hard to get back to him to get his loads. He already has drivers that lived locally and they return loads from Michigan back to Nogales AZ. It hard to break into his circle of driver when the agent already has enough driver to cover his loads. I would say most agents just don't care about that and don't have the loads to keep a BCO going because lots of the shippers are small. I had some great paying loads I did great during hurricane Katrina but I was also lucky, I was able to get in on that. Maybe it was part luck and the fact I sat and waited and keep calling the agent that had the loads, but over the years it not a lot of good paying loads. Good luck if anyone goes to Landstar, and come back and post how successful you are. When you first start you can seem to make more money because you have lots of tax write off. So you don't have to pay to much in taxes say your first 3 years. Once that runs out your seeing more of the real money you make. That's why I like to see people post their numbers or how much money they reported to the IRS they paid taxes on .
