I think this is such a mistake, you cannot dictate to a "contractor" like you can an employee. I agree with some very well written responses here, if you want to put butts in those seats that the company owns, maintains, fuels, insures, and supplies all necessary tools to operate then the employee, not a contractor, a W-2 is vital. You are a business, you've come this far only to stumble with no plan on staffing. I have drivers and no it's no walk in the park, but I assure you this having employees anywhere are no walk in the park. The drivers you want are out there, trust me. Look at yourself and your business plan before blaming the pool from which you have to choose from. The problem is internal not external.

You been in this business for 10 years I would think you would know it not easy finding good driver I have 2 trucks I run one and had driver run the other one it was costing me more to have my other truck run then what I was making due to driver call in at the last mins not showing up late etc.

If you don't pay drivers enough what will make them want to work for you? They might as well go work for companies that offer full benefits, good home time, paid vacation, tarp pay, xtra stop pay, etc, etc.

We don't have a trucker shortage, we have a surplus of trucks and driver who are driving everything into the ground.

@Ridgeline you said it best. Little late to this party but the 1099 is the biggest problem. Maybe if you ran it like a true 1099 is suppose to be ya know driver making his own decisions and payed around 38-40 percent you would get some drivers worth their salt

You don't miss out on SS and Medicare benefits if you are paid on a 1099 unless you fail to pay those taxes since they are not withheld. I think it's a shame this money is witheld from W2 employees. I think the laws should be changed that W2 employees have to pay their own quarterly taxes just the same as any contractor or business. Wages would offset it and it would be a burden but that's the whole point. Taxes are not burdensome enough for most people to get upset about having to pay them giving the politicians cover and an open checkbook on whatever wasteful stupidity.

Not that it really matters. Beside the point of this topic anyway. Looks like OP was a drive by one post wonder anyway.

Doesn't matter. We seem to have developed the skill of being able to talk with nobody listening. ;-)
