Hopefully my future flights will be solely for pleasure, not for business. I really hope that this change to Big G allows me to put down roots and stay a while. (Which was my original hope when I came to Magnum...but we see how that worked out )

 

Now that I am officially gone, and settled into my hotel room on my next adventure. I thought I would do a little bit different "un-Snackbar" post as a final farewell to my former Magnum peeps.

As many have noticed, I have had no issues with speaking my mind about things...and as of late, mostly things that tick me off or aggravate me. Well, I though I would post something a little different. How about the things I LIKED at Magnum....I'll give some of ya'll a second to let that sink in, and will let the world stop spinning from the shock of seeing something like that coming from me.

So here it is....Officially titled

THE THINGS I LIKED ABOUT MAGNUM

1. The people.

Yes, most of the people at Magnum aren't bad. They DO try to do the right thing, while not always successful, they do try. Yes, there were people that I didn't like there, but you get that anywhere you work, so I learned to just tolerate them. And my fellow drivers, even those on here that were critical of my post's, were always willing to offer advice and their experiences in an attempt to help.

2. The equipment

As many know, I came over from Poly Trucking. Mostly because Poly's equipment is 2nd rate crap. Magnum's equipment on the other hand, is excellent. Trucks and trailers are traded regularly. Their equipment is maintained fairly well. The trucks are fairly well equipped, and when an issue comes up (which happens no matter where you work) it is repaired in a timely manner. If it needed to be repaired right away, it was done on the road. If it could wait until the truck was near a company shop, a simple phone call to the nearest shop expedited the repair process and you were back on the road in a timely manner. I was at Magnum just over 18 months, and neither the truck or any of the trailers failed...not once did I have a road service call and never had to visit a reefer repair shop. I am not a big Peterbilt fan, but I knew Magnum ran Petes before I came onboard, and I accepted it. I am not saying that the truck I had was perfect, it had it's quirks...but nothing, except the recall of the engine for a cam replacement, kept me from rolling down the road. And while the cam replacement was done I used a loaner truck, which was better than Poly's regularly assigned trucks.

3. The average length of haul

I would venture a guess and say over half of my loads were in excess of 1000 miles. And a good number of the others were over 650-700. It was rare to get short runs here. One of my longest was a reload coming off of hometime, Auburndale, FL to the northwest. 3400+ miles. And that was followed up with a 2200 mile run.

4. Most of the customers

Yes, there were those problem customers that we all -love- to pull for that seemed that they couldn't hit the ground with their hat, and were always having problems with getting their loads loaded right. But, there were also places like Jamestown and Park Rapids that made you feel appreciated.

5. Hometime

Even though I live in FL, I usually got home within a day or so of my requested day...sometimes a bit earlier than I requested. Nick and Ashley were good at setting things up and getting you home. The only real delay I ever had was the last day or so before I got home, when Jeremy tried to find a load that got me closer to home. I usually got into the Atlanta area, and finding a load out of there to home not only helped the company reduce the loss of a long deadhead, but it also made me a little more money pulling a load an extra 300 miles or so instead of a free deadhead after my final load.

So there you have it. My experience wasn't all sunshine and unicorns, but it wasn't all horrible torture either...there were some good times to be had as well.

SSB, good luck on your future endeavors. We may not always see eye to eye, but you are a straight shooter and a professional, and in this industry that's all you can ask for.
