I would guess it normal. I never heard anyone said it gets hot but the DPF is cleaning it's self going down the road couple times a day. I'm not sure how hot the active Regen are. The normal parked regeneration will run the DPF up to about 900-1000 F. So how hot it normally is driving I'm not sure but it probably pretty hot. It's getting hot enough to burn the soot/carbon build up.
khan1122 Thanks this. -

Yup. I have my scangauge set to read DPF temps amount other things. Going down the highway in the summer fully loaded it will run over 700 degrees all day long and at times over 1000 degrees when doing a regen. Runs about 580 degrees in the winter.
If it was actually doing a regen when you come off the highway you may see the high exhaust temp yellow light on your dash. It's just to warn you in case you planned on touching it when you stopped.ChicagoJohn, khan1122 and Brandt Thank this. -
If theres yellow warning light when you pull off highway and oark somewhere its most likely doing a regen, so let it finish by setting brakes and pressing/holding manual regen button for several seconds. If it requires it, engine rpm will rise and finish parked regen.

Its normal as DPF has to get hot enough to burn soot inside.
