Certain companies have finally begun to die in my life time that I would thought they will run forever. Certain seacan shipping companies come to mind.
There was one called Blue Diamond on Pulaski Highway that was on that road just south of the 695/new 95 interchange for the longest time. Decades actually. That company would take in teenagers fresh from schooling class and they would work a bit transferring boxes from dock to dock to dock for a few hours or however long they liked for however much they were motivated to make. Many were future drivers when they came of age.
This was before the pallet age mid 60's Everything was on the floor then. Trailers were much smaller then too. More intense trucking. Fast forward today, I visited google earth and discovered that old company has finally been bulldozed down to bare dirt and rebuilt into something else entirely. I don't know yet what that something else is but I doubt it will provide the employ to thousands as it once did.
Today's companies for me will revolve around McKesson in Memphis. Or with Western whom has a security division for some really serious trucking that no one talks about. Much. As in armor and arms when in uniform. But that I find attractive, most people do not want to deal with stuff like that. It's just me.
Fed Ex would be another company, again in Memphis for a few hours each day, they become the most intense if not the busiest airport in the free world and that's worth something if you ask me. We have not had too many tornados show up to play in that area this year thankfully.
Great companies

Swift.
Jeez! Shame on u drivers! Taking 3 pages of replies and nobody mentions swift!Dharok Thanks this. -
the best driving jobs ive had were for smaller outfits or contractors, where you were treated like a human, not a company like walmart, maybe the pay is good and the job is easy but to say walmart is a great company, depends on what u think makes a great company i guess, but walmart goes down as one of the worst companies in history imo, sure the owners are very succesfull but they dont have to shop at their own stores lol

LTL is where its at. I'm at RL carriers and very happy. Team driving with my wife. Each are making 95k a year . Solo linehaul makes about 70k and home every day.

I've spoke to the owner of Wayne when I was looking for a job. Super nice dude I'd work there in a second if I ever quit my job.
Also curious about eilen. They run around here in the most bad ### day cabs and mac dump trailers. No two trucks are the same except they are all Petes with straight pipes. Wayne has nice tractors too. -
The team drivers get all the miles and the solo drivers get the crumbs. -
Private carrier, such as Steelcase, Herman Miller, WalMart, etc.
