I took the HazMat a few months ago, as well as 7 or 8 other tests. I took the computer based test, it will score you when you answer the question, there were about 30. If for some reason you don't like touch screens, you can ask for the paper test, and they will hand it to you to take manually and score it when you finish. Good luck.

When I took my permit test, I took all endorsements for B. Even the DMV lady doubted me that I could pass em. Got all except metal coil. No CDL, but ###### I passed almost all of the written tests. And I will be keeping that piece of paper forever.

I just added doubles/triples and tank endorsement to my cdl yesterday in CA. I had to take all the tests. Class c, general knowledge, air brake, combination and then the two endorsements I wanted to add for a total of 6 written tests.

Here is where I screwed up - documents. Within the past month CA now requires you to bring your birth certificate and proof of residency. Also my current CDL and $43 to add the endorsements. I had to make 3 trips to the dmv rounding up the documents so I am posting this so maybe I can save someone a trip.

    Good Luck.

Thanks for the heads up, I just read that in the CDL manual.

How long was it since your last renewal? According to the manual if it's been less then 12 months I'll only have to take the 1 test.

    Ryan423 Thanks this.

Over a year. That explains it.

I had a Class B with Passenger, Air Brake, Tanker and HazMat. I renewed in 2014, and it does not expire until 2019. I was surprised when I went to DMV to get my Class A Permit, had to take the written tests for Motorcycle, Class C Auto, Passenger, Tanker, HazMat, AirBrake, Combo, Class A Gen, and Doubles\Triples. What is ridiculous about this is, if I waited until after I renewed all I would have taken is the Class A General, Combination, and Doubles\Triples. When I tested for my Class A, passed, and I still have a restriction, I can't tow a bus with a bus, basically no city buses with the trailer can that carry passengers. All my license has on the front is Restriction 50, when you look on the back it states "P Restricted to certain vehicles". It does not say what those vehicles are. I have not used the P endorsement for over a decade, but there are no extra tests to keep it if all I do is renew.

That's the same exact thing I'm doing just to add a P (passenger) endorsement but I have to take the skills and road test again. I'm also adding a M (motorcycle) endorsement just for fun.

    **UPDATE**

I went to the DMV today and took my Hazmat endorsement test and PASSED!

I only had to take my Hazmat test since it's been less than 12 months since my renewal. The Hazmat test was roughly 30 questions and honestly wasn't too hard. My next step is to go to a TSA office for fingerprinting and background check.
