You want to talk facts then how about stating some facts about people truelly living in poverty. So far you only say 'i know people'. Fact is, other than a few that have had a devastating health issue, very few people have any excuse for their financial problems.

I hope the OP made it home.
Not sure how you define poor but there's nothing comical about people who can't afford to eat, it is sad indeed. And yes, for the most part people's situations reflect their choices.
Given the simple choice of being rich or being poor very few would choose poor, obviously. Yet many end up living in relative poverty. It's certainly not as simple as people setting out to be poor or wanting to be poor. And the idea that everyone is guaranteed equal opportunity but not equal results doesn't really ring true.
We're all products of our environment and our upbringing. In that regard some are truly disadvantaged. Ignorance, lack of self confidence and environmental pressures are just a few of the things that lead to some making better decisions than others.
It's not a simple problem by any means and the answer isn't as simple as 'teaching people to fish vs. feeding them for a day'. Personally I think more emphasis should be put on the 'teaching to fish' but I was never talking about abject poverty in this thread.
You won't likely get rich driving a truck or working in a warehouse but you will make enough to live, and if you make it a priority you will be able to put some money away for a rainy day. I don't know why so many choose, yes choose, to live at or beyond their means but many do. Maybe the 'teach them to fish' can be applied to teach them to look ahead and to realize the difference between immediate wants and long term needs.
As for the people you know who can't afford a cell phone, a car or more than one meal a day they have made bad choices, no doubt about it.p608 and spyder7723 Thank this. -
