Otr to ltl

That's pretty much how it works at Old Dominion. I just fill in the gaps where there is more freight than the scheduled runs can handle. Definitely a full time position. We're at peak season now, and I'm doing 60+ hrs a week. I can't remember the last time I had less than 3000 miles. Even when things slow down over the winter I still stay busy, 4 days and 2500 mi give or take. To be honest it's nice to have that extra day for myself after grinding it out during the busy times.

 

I would love to have the opportunities you guys are talking about! Here in New Jersey every single ad for local wants 1,2 or 3 years experience. Whether it's Craigslist or indeed doesn't matter. I got offered jobs from over 20 Otr companies with no experience but local forget it! Lucky I found a local job through the school I went through but nobody else will talk to me. Makes no sense to me

 

Apply anyway. Worst thing they can do is say no. Companies like USF Reddaway are self insured and will often waive requirements if they need bodies bad enough. Another option you should consider is applying for a dock position and with a CDL, they may have you run some routes when the senior driver wants to go fishing.

The whole experience being mandatory for local work is a myth. Like many others on here, I've never set foot in a sleeper truck.

 

I don't know but I have applied and when they do get back to me they bring up experience. I'm trying for a big company p&d so I don't move again. Experience immediately comes up first. If anybody knows first hand in jersey Edison/Plainfield area it'd be welcome

 

I can attest that I've been hammering out 2,500 miles every week if I leave Monday night around 9pm and return Friday night around 6pm. Not bad for a short week and long weekend although I sometimes end up once or twice a month coming back Saturday night with well over 3,000 miles. I enjoy my 3 day weekends with the family.

 

I will never EVER EVER run OTR again unless I feel like starting my own business one day. I am making WAY MORE working LTL doing Line Haul. I am home EVERY DAY and EVERY WEEKEND OFF!! Making $1450 a week on starter pay, Guys at my terminal CLEARING 100k a year. BARELY but, I mean c'mon lol...

 

Truth right here. I tried OTR 4 years ago. Did my 4 weeks with a trainer and got assigned a truck. Every day was a ####ing disaster-one thing after another. After 3 weeks solo I reached my limit and quit. The brainwashed OTR clowns can take their "it's a part of the OTR lifestyle" line of ######## and shove that ######## way up where the sun don't shine.
