Met one of our new guys out on his first solo run for the company. Seemed nice enough at the dispatch window, and since he was going the same place as me and didn't know the area I gave him my # just in case.
I get to my destination and take care of business, and as I am getting ready to leave he pulls in. He found the place ok, which was good. I suggested that since it was getting into morning, he might want to head back out after hooking his next set and take his break down the road instead of at the terminal. That's when the attitude started. He's been driving x number of years, didn't need no babysitter, and so on. Suit yourself, I say, and proceed to follow my own advice.
Morning rush is brutal on the route we take back out, and if you don't beat the traffic there is a whole lot of 5 mph stop and go to murder one's drive clock. On a perfect day where everything goes just right it's a 10 1/2 hour drive, so there's not a lot of wiggle room. I was just trying to be helpful, but some people have to learn the hard way.Gearjammin' Penguin, misterG, road_runner and 4 others Thank this. -

One time I was pulling a set of doubles to our warehouse and the night transit guys told me when you go around the corner that leads into the industrial park where the warehouse is it's best to be in 6th gear. So I put the truck in 6th gear and made it around that corner just fine, that is all.

Gave him some basic pointers... GOAL, call ahead, don't put yourself in a bind, and call me if you need anything
I got the same reaction as you two. Snotty attitude "I'm a grown man and I am actually older than you. I dont need you to tell me how to do my job".
In two weeks he had three minor preventables (ripping out airlines, dumping a trailer, and hitting a telephone pole). Then three major write-ups (pulling out of the dock with a forklift driver still inside his trailer, then putting his truck and trailer in the ditch twice where he had to be wreckered).
Good riddance.... We lost half a dozen customers due to his bad attitude. Took us over a year to get their business back.Gearjammin' Penguin, misterG, Mike2633 and 3 others Thank this. -

Well it's pent up demand Thursday so far we've been ho-hum plodding along plot plot plot mediocre pay checks and lighter loads I've been getting done by noon and home early it's been fun and sucky at the same time, the mediocre pay checks kind of blow, but the getting done earlier was fun.
Well, those days are slowly cycling to a close. I got a call right now my boss was doing the Thursday balance and my Thursday route blew my trailer in other words were almost back.
This Thursday were batting a 951 cube load it's going to be a real hoottinany I haven't had a 20,000lbs load in about a month. Food work is a little different routes will go even if the trailer is only half full because there's a service and stop count number that has to be taken into consideration. Like if there are 16 stops even if there not big stops that ends up being it's own route, because you can't split 16 stops up especially if there in the same area. Plus we have a large doubles operation and it cost the same to pull one trailer as it does 2 trailers so it doesn't always pay to cut it pays to cut if they can eliminate a transit run, but if they can't eliminate a transit run then they mine as well run the route. Food work is like that though talk to any broadline person they will tell you they've got days packed to the gills and other days when the trailer is half full, it's just how it goes.
However, it's pack to the gills Thursday they had to cap the load at 951 cube, because anything else they were getting in was just going to blow the truck, which is good I'm looking forward to putting some dollars on the old pay check, I need to get my car fixed still. I'm behind schedule on that, I'm running my life the same way trucking companies run things, ehh if it's still running let it go a little longer will get to it later. After making mediocre money all July I welcome the coming change.misterG and road_runner Thank this.
