The old M-16A2 had Safe, Semi and 3 Round Burst. They set it up with 3 round because they found the soldiers and marines in Vietnam were running out of ammo too quick in firefight situations by using full auto. That and the rifles would jam up quick with carbon.

To convert a 3 round burst to full auto, simply take out the little round thing with the steps (forget all the terminology nowadays) and file it down smooth. It will just spin freely effectively turning the weapon into full auto.

The REAL ones were .30-06. The .308 variant didn't happen until the reproductions hit the civilian market.

 

I agree that no one needs fully auto but man I think it'd be a blast to go out and blow $500 on ammo and fire it all off in 5 minutes at the range just for ####s and giggles.
