Let this thread stand as a testament to just how hard this business is. If double yellow made incorrect decisions I can't find them in this thread really. He did everything right... He just started at the wrong time.

I hope he's doing well with his rental properties. I feel a little bad because at least here in Louisville the yield on rental properties is falling. Poor guys timing is not great.

You refer to torque, but did you mean boost? Boost is measured by psi output from the turbocharger. I have a boost guage in my truck. Yes, I try to stay below 50% boost when trying to maximize fuel economy OR if pulling a long hill with a heavy load and overheating comes into play. Ease off and downshift.

When looking at boost. Every 14lbs of boost uses 110% more fuel than 0 boost. So 28 lbs of boost uses 220% more fuel than 0 boost.

Take that for what you want but it takes more fuel the higher the boost to do the same work.

Yes, I thought "boost" referred to to torque. I also have a manifold gauge. I will experiment with that now. Thanks!

What exactly does manifold pressure tell me about how my engine is performing, and why?

Boost increases the size of the engine. So a 15l engine is about 900 cubic inches. For every 14 lbs of boost you double the size of the engine. So at 14 lbs you are using the equivalent of an 1800 cubic in engine. At 28 lbs you are using the equivalent of 2600 cubic in motor.

It takes a set amount of fuel to burn each lb of air. Doesn't matter if it's a 6 ltr dodge pickup or a 25 lt locomotive engine.

Maximum horsepower on my engine is at 2000 rpm's. It's a rare event for me to get there. Maximum torque seems to be around 1400 rpm's. If rpm's fall below that is around the time I look to downshift, BUT with a 13 speed I have about 250 rpm's between gears in high range.

I bought the truck as a 9 speed, but it was convertible. I dropped in the new shifter. As a 9 speed that 500 rpm gap was a real problem pulling heavy in the hills, really had to wind it up in order to upshift.

I will "tap out" and let more informed folks discuss manifold pressure.

No way...I'm learning from what everyone has to offer. It's more than I know!

Don’t step over a dollar to save a dime

Fuel economy is an important factor in today’s market but it should not be the make or break it for your operation. Just something to remember.

He is a lease purchase guy. Fuel economy is the only way he has to increase net.
