.96 cpm ? is that a joke or the actual pay?

I never thought they made that little ; they're always pegged on the governor. You would think they'd be cruising behind prime trying to get +8.5 mpg

Had 4 folks call in the last week. "Have we got a great new dedicated...."
All less than $2 a mile. I don't care if we team and can run harder. Just means the equipment needs that much more down time and repair. Costs more to run team.... not less.

Because they think to be a real man they need to own that 150k truck, or something like that. Or they are willing to work for free (or close to it) because they always dreamed of being a truck driver. Or some other stupid reason like that.

They were pretty big in automotive freight, but were canned by one or two of the Big 3. We haven't hauled much of anything on the broker side for at least a year, maybe two. And quite frankly, I do not miss them. The rates were good that we did get, but they were calling you every ten minutes for your location. Bunch of knuckle heads over there.

One reply I have heard is "freedom". That was when I was a company driver at Swift, docked next to a Swift lease operator. He wanted to talk. I asked him questions about the numbers and expressed my doubts about making it work as a business. He defended it by saying, "But I don't have to take a load if I don't want to. I've got FREEDOM!"

I would say that perception of freedom is based only on the comparison to being a company driver. That was the case with the gentleman I was talking to. Limited knowledge can lead to less than optimal decisions.
