Not saying the steering wheel is going around less, but it makes is easier to turn a big steering wheel when you have a smaller wheel to turn it. Thing of pulleys and gears, why do you think they go from big pulleys to smaller ones, or big gears to smaller ones. Same sort of concept. Sure the gears change the ratio, but it's easier to turn the smaller gear (or pulley) then the bigger one.

In any case, that post is 6 years old. I haven't use a spinner knob in over 5 years.

Lets think about this... actuallymounting one of these devices if not mounted outside the diameter of the wheel actually decreases your leverage not the other way around
Its simply a feel good thing nothing more... don't get me wrong i currently have one in my truck and the reason is because i have really bad tendonitius where i can't bend my wrists other than that there is no reason to have one besides looking for an argument. And don't get me wrong i love a argument as much or more than the next guy

I wonder why no company drivers are allowed to have steering wheel knobs?

I used to race cars and one of the things you learn is not to wrap your thumbs around the steering wheel because it can and will break them in a crash. I'd say one of those spinners certainly could do the same.
