    @road_runner -

If you were to get hurt doing dock work off the clock, they'd fire you in a heartbeat and worker's comp wouldn't cover medical expenses. It would be all on you.

Go ahead and work after your run if they insist, but stay on the clock as long as they need you. Then come back to work in 10 hours. That's legal and fair. So when you come in "late" the next morning, it's on them. Something has got to give. Don't let it be you.

Aren't they a union shop? Isn't this kind of abuse the things unions are supposed to protect against? Aren't you already making substandard wages compared to other LTLs due to contractual concessions? Don't volunteer to give them any additional concessions directly out of your pocket. Man, your situation has got me heated!

We are not union. I doubt anyone would bother with a barn that has three drivers left

I contacted the FMCSA last night and filed a formal complaint against my carrier. I wrote that we have two drivers working up to 10 additional hours each week off the clock due to the short manning.

Realistically, I agree. I will stay clocked in until I am done working. There is just no way I could clock out and help them make this work. Three people can not do what is meant for seven.

Any other company would fly in extra drivers. Maybe if corporate gets a friendly nudge from the FMCSA, they would be more open to sending us help and making things easier on everyone else.

Fun times. So with all these empty seats, you would think that the least they could do is keep the spare trucks running.

But no. Two trucks have been down at the vendor for about a month. One in our yard won't start and a fourth one won't build up air.

I called up the vendor and asked if he could get things going so everyone had a truck. He said "RR, nothing against you... But your company is 180 days past due on your repair bills. I got about two dozen other trucks ahead of you from drivers that pay their bills. I will try to come by later today... If not, Happy New Year."

Someone is not going to town today. Unfortunately my truck is one of the two that works.

Rule I had to learn the hard way: Never do the company a favor. It always backfires and never gets thanked or acknowledged.

I'm the kind of person that will pitch in, it's how I was raised, but in the corporate world it's like showing your belly.

Aside from the illegal log issues, you don't get paid properly doing that.

I'm sure most people in here know, but have you named this company? I'm looking to get into ltl in the near future and I need to know who to avoid.

The idiots I work for is Reddaway. I am hoping these issues I am having are isolated to my terminal.

Just got a call from the FMCSA call center letting me know they are processing my complaint

This is kinda a scheisty way of going about it but I feel like they are tying my hands. Here is my strategy:. If the FMCSA can force everyone off the dock when they are off the clock, it will force corporate to either bring in help or raise the wage to attract new drivers. I absolutely will not work for free.

I don't know personally what they are like at the terminals, but around here the equipment is junk and the drivers are worse, at least in line haul. They are probably constantly under the gun, but I'm constantly seeing them speeding far faster than what is reasonable, and I always see them trying to get away with ignoring chain laws pulling doubles with the single axles. Lots of broken down trucks too.

Reddaway is part of the YRC mess. It sounds like they are apparently the worst part. In my neck of the woods there's YRC and the regional carrier is Holland. There are plenty of horror stories at both, but this takes the cake. They also have bad equipment, a shortage of drivers, and lower pay. Morale is low, but I have never heard of anyone working off the clock there. That'd never fly.

It sounds like you're on a sinking ship. The late bills for repairs are a canary in the coal mine. Save yourself!
