But you are seeing the fact that they are inspected less frequently as leniency. Is it leniency or is it respect earned from having processes in place to make certain that your equipment is properly maintained and in safe working order? I see it as the latter. It’s DOT‘s way of saying, “OK. You are focused on making sure things are right. We are not going to harass you since you are being responsible and doing what needs to be done on your own.“

To me it is sort of like growing up amongst other siblings. As you become mature and responsible you earn privileges and latitude, which you maintain by continuing proper behavior. Your younger and less mature siblings may not enjoy those same privileges and latitude but they can earn them as time goes by. The less mature siblings may view your privilege and latitude as an unfair advantage, but as they mature they will understand it.

I know in California sometimes the CHP will come to a company's terminal and do mass inspections on site, not sure about other states but probably this is how they do the UPS fleets and similar.

Look at how many people were killed by UPS trucks. Things can happen at any time. Literally at any moment something can break. They look at the numbers. They are no more safer than Mercer. So by your logic Mercer should get the same treatment. No way, I say. I had the unfortunate experience of being behind a Mercer truck on 95 last year while he proceeded to spew water from some military freight he was hauling all over everything in his wake. Really made a mess of the four wheelers behind him. It was quite unsafe.

I don’t work for Mercer. I was simply pointing them out as an example of a company that focuses on having properly maintained equipment. You’re entitled to your perspective. At any given moment a piece of equipment can fail regardless of what name is on the door, and a driver can operate in and unsafe and careless matter regardless of what name is on the door. Whether or not you were just inspected by the DOT, both of those realities are still true. Regardless, from my perspective companies that focus on properly maintaining equipment and encoraging good driver safety practices deserve the privilege of less frequent inspection.

I've driven trucks that have passed level 1s mechanically to only be written up anyway for ridiculous things like reflective tape being torn. It's a money grab. We just see it a little differently that's all. I'm certain we can agree to disagree.

How safe is a rig in "tip top" shape when the dispatch of that company has the most stringent, un realistic delivery schedules. Hence all the ups, and FedEx involved in FATAL accidents

Buts let's excuse them because they change parts out back at the terminal

I couldn't tell if he was a contractor or if that was rental truck but either way that was quite unsafe.

I think CSA is one of the most over reaching, un calculated forms of tyranny against American small business.

CSA is set up to benefit larger carriers. For the same reason you can have 10 fatality accidents in a fleet of 100 trucks and only have a 10% accident ratio.

But a one truck carrier gets extorted for some petty "safety" violation, such as reflective tape not in proper shape, which is interpation, now that carrier is 100% of the time in violation.

For CSA to truly work ( CARRIER SAFETY ACCOUNTABLITY ) , it needs to account for safety. For every quarter that a carrier gets no moving violations, CSA points will get reversed. Many carriers suffer from petty extortion. The only way to reverse this reality is to award carriers with point reversals every quarter when they prove their safety through no moving violations. Or no equipment violations.

But no moving violations is the " ultimate goal " of equipment inspections in the first place so moving violations should be the main focus.
