    Hi everyone, I'm obviously new to the industry and am currently enrolled into a Professional Truck Driving School. I am putting in applications, but am getting nervous because it appears the trainer programs are extremely long. My instructor said to keep looking as there are many companies out there with much shorter training requirements. I live in Rapid City, SD and am a 70% disabled veteran and as such have extreme anxiety. My anxiety will make it very difficult to live in a truck with someone I don't know for months or even weeks. What would be best for me personally is to be an owner/operator but there is no way I could afford that at the moment even though I could have contracts immediately due to my wife being a former dispatcher out of Kansas. Any suggestions on companies with decent pay and short training programs would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    Schneider has a 3 week orientation, you'll do 2 weeks of training in class learning the
    Schneider's way of doing things, Qualcom system, trip planning, backing, and learning how they want you to couple and uncouple the trailers. If you can do that basic stuff they'll send you out on your last week with a trainer. If you do okay and feel comfortable with handling the truck, your basically out on your own after that, or if not they'll keep you with the trainer for a little bit longer.

    You at WDT? I told the guys in my class: When I get outside there. I’m gonna pick up a rabid dog from the spca. Put him in the passenger seat, and name him after the teacher.

    Sir it Ma'am, with all respect, you shouldn't attempt to control an 80000 pound projectile if you can't control anxiety.

    That being said my company put out a request to our trainers asking for a volunteer that was willing to take student and his service dog. I'm sure it wasn't a seeing eye dog, so I can only speculate a hearing problem or perhaps an anxiety problem.

    The point being, you don't ease anxiety by short cutting training. My first day solo was brutal. I can't imagine surviving it if I was impaired in any way, physical or mental.

    Your career will be short... after all this effort.

    I highly recommend a service animal, and then proceed. You might be surprised how many company's will accommodate your situation.

    If you are thinking of pursuing a service animal...stop CDL school until you get that resolved. The reason being, companys look at school and on job training as a single event. They don't expect to see a break of any significant time in between.

    I admire your ambition and wish you well. Talk to companies first, then proceed when you find ones that will accommodate you.

    Yeah WDT. Current teacher been there 2 yrs. I like him, but he is by far the worst sideseat driver I’ve had lol. I’d do a lot better if he’d just let me drive.

    Oh it’s not to the point of needing a service animal. And my past profession showed me that I perform at my best under extreme stress. It’s more of the fact I hate people, especially people I don’t know.

    Control problems, you really should consider another vocation, And should you be interested in the company that will train you the best, not the shortest. Your not even licensed yet, and looking to cut corners. You should go to CRST for training I believe they suit you best.

    If your biggest concern is living with someone in a truck, have you thought about getting a local truck driving job, so you can be home every night?
    dump truck
    cement mixer
    food & beverage

    @Chinatown will have some ideas.

    Where did I say I have “control problems?” I just don’t like being stuck in a small space with someone I don’t know for weeks on end including in hotel rooms. Not trying to cut corners either. Ideally getting trained on a local dedicated route in which I’m home each night would be perfect. Then once trained head out OTR solo. Way too many nasty unhygienic people out there working as trainers. Yes I know this from personal experience and my SO having worked dispatch and currently managing a PFJ.
