Hello all, I'm a new driver for the most part and have made some cringe worthy mistakes this week with my carrier training.
1. Forgot to release trailer brakes while pulling away.
2. Forgot to release tractor brake while coupling.
3. Tried to make a left turn arrow, no idea why. My trainer was not happy. Ended up taking the turn way to fast, worst of all right in front of the company terminal. Still made it but missed the arrow.
4. Curbing the trailer tires once.
5. Nearly hit a car coming around a round a bout that was sitting behind my left mirror. (Blind spot?) guess I wasn't looking hard enough.
That's pretty much it so far in 3 weeks of training.
What common mistakes or any mistakes did you make while you were a new driver?
Just curious to know and learn.

Missing a turn or getting lost and turning down a street without knowing if it's a truck route or not then finding out it's a street that trucks shouldn't be on.
Better to pull over, get your bearings, and call the police, if necessary, to block traffic so you can turn around than keep driving and make a bad situation worse.Brickwall, BUMBACLADWAR, IluvCATS and 1 other person Thank this. -

Sounds like a fairly solid 3 weeks to me. I'm guessing you're fairly young, 25ish? Don't rush. Big truck driving is all about basics and using good judgment.
Your brain is processing a WHOLE BUNCH of new data. It takes a few years to become smooth.
You want smooth. Smooth is fast.
No rush.LoneCowboy, Brickwall, BUMBACLADWAR and 7 others Thank this. -
I learned by my mistakes... that's why I'm so smart... hope you are learning too.
BUMBACLADWAR Thanks this. -
Ok now so listen...
This is just between us.
See what had happened was...
And that's how I became the driver I am today!
Easy peasy!

Getting in the business to start with. Next biggest mistake is thinking your about to make the big bucks. Everything else is but commentary.

What I just wrote was the truth. I'm not in all that great a mood right now. However lets just say it for what it is. The chances ANY new driver is still driving after that first year is maybe 30% at best. I will not blow sunshine up a green drivers butt. This business is brutal.BUMBACLADWAR Thanks this.

There you go again. Why don't you have some wine and cheese, kick back and take in some rays.LoneCowboy, homeskillet and Gunner75 Thank this.
