I was stopped on the side of the highway off duty and I drove a few miles to a truck stop while still off duty. I thought is was no big deal but they fired me.
I have a job interview tomorrow and I am trying to figure out what to say if they ask why I got fired.
I am thinking about saying it was a misunderstanding about the personal conveyance rule.
Is that a safe answer?
I got fired and have a question

The only safe answer is the absolute, unvarnished truth. You can rest assured that they will call your previous employer regarding this and the two explanations better line up very closely. HoS violations are a very serious matter not only to the employer, but also to the insurance companies that tell the employer who they can or cannot hire.
KANSAS TRANSIT, deathB4decaf, Vic Firth and 4 others Thank this. -
Just tell it like it is. You were ignorant about hours of service but since being fired you had plenty of time to read up on them.

Thanks. I was thinking that maybe my ex employer would not tell them the details. So maybe I could think of something else.

Tell the truth. The new employer should look at it as it ain’t that bad. Hey you were trying to not be on the side of the highway and protect the equipment and not be a safety hazard. You seem new so you can say you made a mistake you won’t make again getting used to this elog. Now you’ve learned your lesson plan your trips better. There is a truckstop book you can get at the truckstop that list all truckstops in areas in the us. I always look at my route and figure an hour before my time expired where are the nearest big truckstop. Also a atlas list the rest areas also. Might want to invest in this stuff. Even with gps I still used a road atlas and truckstop book. Both I bought from the truck stop.
