I’m starting recap hours. Setting myself up so I don’t have to take a 34.
I’m staying below 10 hours driving a day.
Does the non driving on duty add to the requirement?

Never done this before. Don’t want to goof it up.

Yes it does. Any on duty time contributes to your 70.

Any/all Drive time or On Duty time adds to your 70. But in reality, you can't do what's asked of you and necessarily run into your 70 or not run into your 70. Don't read to much into trying to control your 70 hours situation.

If you hit it you hit it. If you don't you don't. If you have lots of work to hit it in 6 days hit it. If not don't worry about it. But the 70 is why you don't want to use any more On Duty time then is absolutely necessary to keep safety department happy.

Easy way to think about it: If today is Tuesday - whatever hours you worked on the previous Tuesday - you will gain back at the end of the day Tuesday or 00:00 Wednesday...
I always found it was easier to run on recap if I wrote the hours worked on a printed calendar.

Now I just run as hard as possible and take the reset. I schedule all my pickup and deliveries, so I have figured out how to absolutely maximize productivity by taking a reset while under load when possible. I am going for the record this year. Only question is if I can keep my sanity until Dec. 31.

I’m trying to be available. I lost a run last week because I never worked recaps. Didnt know at all how to handle it.
Now I also want to avoid 34’s. Ridiculous to keep getting 48 and 72 hour Thirty Fours at your terminal town.
I like it so far. The extra time each day.
I’m here to work. Not sit at my terminal.

What if you go over ten hours by one minute? The following week you turn into a pumpkin?

You realize it's 8.75 if you want to work every single day and never recap..

If you're sitting, you're accumulating hours. Some times it makes sense to do a restart, sometimes not. But on long trips with too much time, ALWAYS wait until near the final before doing your restart and wait until you stop for your normal 10 before starting the restart. Don't "throw away" any more hours than you must.

Think it through from the different angles. After a while it start to become clearer. I've ran as long as 9 weeks on recaps and never had a week with less than 3,000 miles and had some weeks that exceeded 3,700 miles. How you manage your hours is all dependent on the types of runs you typically see

I prefer to get the miles "in the bank" as it were. I run as hard as freight allows and burn my 70 in 5 or 6 days....get the miles turned as quickly as possible, put the money in the bank, then a 34 hr reset. That way, if freight slows, you have the miles and a full bank account instead of a logbook full of hours and no freight.

Log books used to have a recap column on the side, it’s not hard.
