My husband is wanting to train me to get my CDL in his truck.
It would be leased onto Mercer if that makes a difference.
I have been a pilot car for him for the past 12 years and will have my permit prior to the training.
I do have a basic knowledge of the truck and how to secure loads but have never actually driven.
I have had my permit once in the past but never got the experience necessary to obtain the license.
I believe we are at a point to be ready to proceed with this plan and any advice is much appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Melissa

I would suggest to get your permit & medical card first to be legal. It's just a quick written test.

Afterwards, go with him on runs to gain experience. Whenever he is between loads, find a large parking lot and practise backing, turning in tight corners (use orange cones) and parallel parking.

The highway driving part you will get in no time since it's just maintaining lanes and defensive driving. It's the learning how to park in a packed truck stop & docking at a small shipper that will get'cha lol.

Take your time and don't stress. Once you learn the basics, you can take the CDL test at the DMV anytime. Don't let these trucking schools fool you into thinking they "hold" your CDL.

    Good luck!

Any one can train you if I’m reading what your asking correctly, go out to an empty lot have some obstacles too, set them up and practice backing around them with truck/trailer set them in a single row about 3-5 of them and do the serpentine back, have the driver talk/show and ask any questions you may have, the only dumb question will be the one not asked

Only thing important to the DMV Officer is that you can drive the vehicle for which you are applying for a license to drive.

Your hubby will be putting his insurance at risk and his contract with Mercer if it's not ok'd by Mercer and Mercer's insurance company.

Has Mercer lowered their standards THAT low now? You used to need some experience before they would take you on.

Don't quote me, but I believe they will take new drivers, such as the OP, as long as they are the spouse and will be co-driver of someone already leased on to Mercer.

I can see that. So they would be vetted and have a trainer basically with them for the entire time they're driving. I'd be surprised if they let them run solo though.

depends on the insurance company and up to mercer if you're allowed to drive .......... but what they don't know won't hurt them but as bad as companies want husband and wife teams they might think it's fine .... get your Description and physical card ..... learn to drive enough to pass the test .. you may have to rent a truck to take the test but is certainly better than going to truck driving school ... that's the old school way

Take this for the .02 it is probably worth.

The situations where hubby trains wifey are often very stressful. Only you can judge that - is he patient, etc... I've seen so many of those things go up in flames and really screw up the relationship, lol.

I'd honestly suggest you go to a good school. Don't risk his job by the "what they don't know won't hurt them." Not to mention, the liability issue that puts on that company if you're sneaking it and you have an incident.
