No matter what year your diesel engine was built, with out an APU, no matter how new your engine is, you will not be able to achieve much more than 6 mpg avg. No matter what new marvel of engineering you have running non stop for weeks on end.
I also just was told at Thermo King if you have an Evolution APU 3000 series I believe I was told. Built within the last 5 years. That the evaporator, and expansion valves are failing. I was told the last generation expansion valve was a stainless bore and valve, and the newer valve is plastic. So that may be the reason.
Here is the secret advice.

The S60 is lifetime (my ownership) at 6.3. Billboard dragging a house.
That’s running a 7.5 kW gen set about half the time, dead of winter, and heat of summer.
The N-14 was at 7 mpg, used Little gas gen sets and AC units.
