I use to work in a commercial truck tire shop for years before driving one. I now have my own road service for truck repairs and tires. Anyway a popular pitch to selling a new tire would be telling the drivers this,
"The nail or hole in your tire is on the shoulder of the tread or in the sidewall the tire can not be repaired and you will have to buy a new one." now if its a large hole that might be true but it is a sales tactic used everywhere in tire shops
If you run across this line please don't buy a new tire not unless you want to. I have fixed many repairs on trucks and cars and this is completely safe.
Tip of the day to help you drivers save money.
Don't fall for this sales tactic at the tire shop.

Most people that are smart with tires will know ANY hole in the sidewall is no good.
I wouldn't fix sidewalls when i was a wrench. I wouldn't want anyone fixing them for me.
Can it be repaired. SURE. Will it last. DOUBTFUL. Think of all that sidewall flex as the tire rolls down the road.
Besides. And i could be wrong on this. But I think it's a gooberment regulation.
Used to be if the tire was in anyway decent enough to use. Use it. Repaired or age didn't matter.
SAFETY is cracking down. Tires have to be less then 5 years now and holes can't be beyond the tread area.
Now, granted you all might want to argue about a sales pitch. But it occasionally makes the news.Justrucking2, jamespmack and homeskillet Thank this. -

TA/Petro does this. And they have a policy that they will not repair the tire.6wheeler Thanks this. -

They put it out back for a recapping company to pick it up and recap it and yes that hole in the tire gets repaired and then the tire is sold as a "new recap" for about $250BUMBACLADWAR and buddyd157 Thank this. -
i had a nail in the near outer edge, the dealership said i needed a new tire, Toyota does not fix that type of location. and of course, i did not have "tire coverage"....
i took it to my garage mechanic..he plugged it, all is as fine as can be.
i do suspect, that when i turn in the car, toyota will charge me for a new tire though.6wheeler Thanks this. -
