How would they know? My Volvo held two gallons. Couldn't see that far. You don't carry a spare gallon? It's only $3...lol.

I have heard of this happening plenty of times, so I don't doubt you one bit. I'm curious though, what makes these people answer the door in the first place? If I'm in a rest area or a truck stop, and my truck is parked in a marked spot, I don't answer the door for no one when I'm in the sleeper.

Also, I know for me personally. And I'm not saying this to sound like a "tough guy". But if a cop woke me up from a dead sleep and told me he wanted to do an inspection, I would tell him to go lick a donkey's butthole.

While I wouldn't try to make a big deal about it if it happens, but are you required to break a rest period for an inspection?

You do have to be on duty if you are present for an inspection, correct?

Clearly, being abrasive about it would be a bad idea, but can an officer actually force you to go on duty if you are legally parked?

I say this because I was taught that if I got that DOT knock on the door, I should let the officer know that I am taking my 10 hour break, but would be happy to go on duty for an inspection when the break is done. I was also told to be #### sure my butt wasn't in the driver's seat at any time when talking to them, because some DOT officers would say that if your butt is in that seat, you are on duty.

I'd refuse if I was legally parked and sleeping.. By the law you have to go on duty, so if Im out of hours they would be making me violate my clock.. I'd tell them to come back after my break, but I can be a bit hard headed.. lol

Technically it wouldn't be violating your clock. You can stay "on duty" for as long as you want (even after your 14 or 70). You are just not allowed to drive until after you've had the necessary "off duty" time. So going "on duty" will do nothing except restart your 10 hour break.

But I'm with you on refusing to cooperate. That's a huge abuse of power on their part. I actually remember hearing something about a law being made stating that it is illegal to harass a driver that is on his 10hr break. Anyone have info on that?

I didn't know you could stay on duty if not driving if you were put of hours. I thought that would be a violation. So I can park with 5 mins on my clock and stiff do a on duty pti with out it being a violation?

    Yeppers.
With one exception in team driving, all hos regs care about is limiting drive time. On duty effects driving, but is not limited at all.

You can work 100 hours straight, just have to take that 34 before driving.
