So just curious, I have a 379 short hood. Someone told me that a long hood could be put on it.. isn't there a difference in the frame length?

my opinion is I prefer a long hood for two reasons. One the active shaking on those tells me what the truck is thinking about and two in winter if it yaws towards a tractor jack knife I will see it really early in the process with that hood if I have not already caught it in the spot mirror. -
It’s a replacement hood with no slope. It ain’t longer.
I believe it’s RLK Services that makes them.wore out Thanks this. -
If a guy was to actually convert a short hood to long he is gonna move cab, sleeper and everything else back 8 inches. Replace steering shaft and shifter right off the bat. Almost guaranteed the engine harness will get just short enough you have to either replace or splice it. A/C hoses as well. That's just a start there will be countless items that make you scream ####. So I stand by a statement I have made many times. It's cheaper to buy the truck you really want not close hoping to "build" it. For #### sure faster
muletrain, Nothereoften, AModelCat and 2 others Thank this. -
This industry makes me scream %$#@ already.
In my working years I screamed nothing, just cursed proper. Now I just scream. -
Pete 379 Standard hood fits same size motors available in long hoods. Plenty of big block Cummins and c15 in standard hood 379. Long hoods have the cab set back further on frame as well. Google explains all this

I know this is an old post but I drive an '07 379 short hood with a C15 625, 18 speed with a 36 inch sleeper and regular air ride. My dad drives an '06 379 extended hood with a C15 475, 18 speed day cab with low air leaf suspension. When parked side by side they are the exact same length from the front of the hood to the back of the frame. My truck turns and rides 100% better than his. Mine light weighs 30,000 with 200 gallons of fuel and a 48 foot tank trailer, his weighs roughly 31,000 under the same circumstances. I love my short hood, he loves his long hood and it's all operators preference as to which is better.
KANSAS TRANSIT Thanks this. -
Just talked to a peterbilt sales rep and he said he can’t get me a 389 with cumminis and short hood at all. Paccar only.
I guess I will be looking for someone else who can make it happen.Last edited: Jun 2, 2021
