Is Window Tinting a Magnet for DOT?

I see New Jersey and New Hampshire do not allow window tinting on the driver left/right windows. My guess is they give a pass to visitors from other states. The rest of the states allow 70% or less, but I couldn’t find information for commercial vehicles, just what FMCSA states on their site.

It certainly would be a risk driving through NJ and NH with a tint of 70% even though it complies with FMCSA.

Just roll your windows down on scales . I have a tinted driver window. Helps at nite too, when people have hi-beams on.

One guy recently posted on here of his windows down and the scale pulled him in for inspection. Made him pull his tint off. I don't remember him mentioning his percentage though.

I used to do inspections and had one of those window meters. Stock tint was 77% of light allowed through back then. (90's) Don't know what it is now.

There's a few apps on your phone but I don't know how accurate they are.

Couple of years ago I was stopped at scales in KY ( I-75 north @ Georgetown). Guy in front of me was pulled over for window tint and I was random. I left after they checked my paperwork, but the guy with tint he was still there with DOT cop. Pretty sure he got a ticket.

I don't get the tinting thing, my state is rather screwed up - too many people have blackout side windows and I can't see how they get away with it, my wife's car and my pickup because of her condition have legal tinting to help her but I hate it, especially at night. However I found out in 2017 that FMCSA rules are trumped by the ADA when a newly hired driver had made a request for an accommodation - tinted windows due to "remissness skin cancer". It took me a week or two to get a clarification from the EEOC on if this is a needed accommodation, got documentation from his doc to support his request and they said 'yeppers, you got to do it'. I didn't do this to try to weasel out of it but rather set both of us up to fight any bs tickets that will come up. So he has 55% tinting on the side windows and 70% on the windshield. I have been to court four times to fight tickets and each time the court threw it out because it is a qualified accommodation. The last time the judge said to the officer who issued the ticket "next time read the doctor's letter".

I know a guy with limo tint on the left right windows and a dark tint in the front. Has yet to receive a ticket.

I did have one of my trucks with a mild side window tint (it was tinted when truck was purchased) and when it came time to get an inspection they made him remove the tint in order to pass.

Go to the LOVES. south of Atlanta ( is it called Jackson?) - ask for Cobra - CH 19.

He has some stuff that is DOT legal, blocks all UV and massive heat reduction.

I’ve had both trucks I owned (own) done - I get skin cancer pretty easy.

He’ll give you the spec sheet on it, and a copy of the FMCSA regulation to carry.

It doesn’t look very dark at all.

Skin cancer is mostly why I want to have it on. Many people don’t know, but skin cancer is the most common type of cancer. I trained a student who told me he got cancer on his forearm from driving a local truck for years. I currently wear long sleeve shirts, even during summer, and people look at me like I’m crazy. Hahaha.

A slightly pigheaded friend of mine had a argument on the side of the 401 in Ontario with a opp officer who demanded he pull the tint off his window .. his beef was the opp officers cruiser had darker tint he took the ticket to court and won .. myself I’d just take it off and leave ticket free

The magnetic stuff probably be the way to go. Over the sticky stuff. If it's still available.

Cops don't like to see the stuff. One got killed because he couldn't see inside at night. I don't know if it's true or not as it happened long before most of OUR time. So I can't verify but it was told by the highway patrol that was putting on the safety inspection class. Which I was taking in the late 80's. So I won't classify him as a truckstop tale.
