Interesting. These would also allow for easier connections to heavy trailers that would otherwise need to be cranked down to avoid high-hooking or missing the kingpin entirely.

I may look into buying a set for that alone, even if I never chain up.

Thanks for the great post Dave!

I’m a bit embarrassed to say I’ve never chained up before. To me that’s real deal trucking out there what you are doing.

Question: do you throw chains on a trailer axle as well? Obviously that doesn’t help you up the mountain but what about braking on the way down? Would this help with the ### end wanting to come around?

20190222_152938.jpg I have to chain up just to get to my house during winter. That's what I get for moving to the mountains. 20190222_153641.jpg

Yes, and yes. Oregon requires drags.

The thing about these long steep grades is if you have to slow down or stop.

If you have to stop and you're not chained, you're done.

If you don't slide into the embankment, the guy behind you, or off the mountain all together, you're never gonna get going again, and you'll be jack knifed in seconds.

Then bear is gonna throw the book at you for causing a disaster.

The trailer can slide on some of the steeper stuff.

I've been fooling with this for awhile, this year has been the worst.

This hills are 6 and 7 percent grades, long, switchbacks, you're not going fast.

I may even start an annual hill climb event in the summer. No speed involved, strictly style points.

Auto chains. Real chains at the flick of a lever. But they're $5000 installed.
