Yes. I’ve asked the question. I’ve been researching for a few weeks, mainly comparing salaries and expenses, and it seems that both are about the same. Let me explain.
I run over-the-road, all drop-and-hook, all terminal-to-terminal, and the top pay is currently 70 cpm at this company. Making $120k/year is not a hard task to complete. I don’t mind running the road, so I’ll only take 75 days off each year.
However, with a family, it’s much better to take off 120 days per year, make the same money, but is the headache going to be worth it?
I keep seeing the O/O posts showing expenses and profit, and even if you make $200k, you’re really only making 50% of that, because the rest goes toward fuel, insurance, maintenance, and truck payments.
I know it’s a tough question for anyone to answer, and I must be the one to answer this question for myself. With that being said, can you tell me if this all adds up, or am I just under the impression that O/O makes more money?
I know, time freedom is a must for all of us, and something truly cherished. But I’m looking at this from the financial stand point. Is it possible to make $8-15k/week pulling flatbed, step deck, RGN, and tanker?
Am I missing something here with my assessment? I need some advice. If location matters, I live in Central Arkansas.
I just want to have the time freedom, along with the money. If I can clear $200k+/year after all expenses, I’d be very interested.
Thanks all.

Ok first thing is figure out how many weeks your willing to work then are you doing own authurity or are you gonna join up with a company are you gonna get a 2nd truck and driver or just you. If you do own authority decide what you wana haul flatbed is great average cpm is 2.33 at the least. From what ive heard you should put away 30% for taxes then figure out how much it takes for you to run the truck so say you buy a truck that is pre emissions and you get 6.5 mpg so say you can average 550 miles per day so do 550÷6.5 and then multiply it 3.08 (average fuel price) then after you figure that out how much are you gonna pay yourself if your gonna stay a 1 rig company pay yourself better because your not gonna be saving to buy a 2nd truck so i would do this
2.33 -30% - .10 - your paycjbrents Thanks this. -

There are a few gigs where a guy could do that, but they are few and far between and somebody is already doing them. PLUS there is 100 trying to undercut them as we speak.
Every time I started doing something that was GOOD bucks, I always figured I had 6 months to a year before others geared up and turned into just a plain old gig, and it has worked out that way for the most part.
If you are making what you say you are with the time off you claim, I would just sit tight, unless you absolutely hate it.cjbrents and Diesel Dave Thank this. -
Theres no real yes it will be better or no it wont depends on what you want to do if you wana start a fleet i suggest stay at your job save up some money then buy a rig or 2 and get the company going if you can start a good company then you will have the perfect retirement program i mean heck you sell 5 20 or 30 grand rigs and boom your prepped for retirement

You've got a few things right. If you gross 200k as an O/O you're only going to keep about half of it, and maybe not that much depending on luck.
If you're an O/O you're going to take more time off than you think because you don't have a job when you're truck is being repaired. It works best when you can schedule PM work to be done when you choose to be off but it certainly doesn't always work out that way.
Look at Diesel Dave's history (stats) here and his response. That should tell you a lot.cjbrents and Diesel Dave Thank this. -
Honestly ive had a guy with more thanks and messeges than dave and he was a owner op and doing #### well decide what you would enjoy more

Since 99, I doubt I have over 10 days a year off due to breakdowns. If you count breakdowns that actually shut me down, that would turn into maybe 2 or 3 days a year. I do a lot of maintenence, but do it on my off time, and anymore it takes me three days to do what I used to do in a couple of hours. lol
