First of all, the company and the trainer would have to be on the same page. Do you want ‘meat in the seat’, or do you want a driver? If you want meat in the seat, continue on with the ever popular Dumb and Dumber training program.

For real drivers, change the trainer pay. Trainers gets paid based on performance. He gets a simple salary every week ($800-900/week) but a big performance bonus based upon the students performance after the student is issued his own truck. 1 month, 6 month, 1 year bonuses per student. 1 year safe with 75000 miles, trainer gets a $20k bonus. But this would be for the trucking company that wanted to rule the roost.

There would be no need to figure out a set curriculum for trainers. The results would show whether or not the trainer knew his craft.

Well, here’s the issue I see with that.

I’m sure you’ve heard a saying about being responsible for what you say as opposed to what one understands?

I could show someone what they need to know. I’d almost be honored to do that. But, them understanding it is a horse of quite a different color.

A set curriculum is a joke anyway, no two students are the same. Some are not trainable at all, many are average, and some learn so fast it is startling.

Every great trainer will be disappointed by a bum trainee. It happens. But knowing that, if you had an idiot in your truck, and your reputation on the line, what would you do? I sure as Hell wouldn’t sign off on him.

    Agreed, and I wouldn’t either.

Truth be told, I’d actually feel pretty bad that I couldn’t impart my knowledge on the young driver-to-be in a manner they couldn’t understand.

It was about his thinker pic. I’m thinking it didn’t show the pic and put your words in place of it.

If he’s willing to learn, we should be able to teach them in a way that they will understand. But if we only know one way of teaching, it is we the trainer who has failed, not the student.

I’m pretty sure that was what their recruiter told me. Well, 2 weeks of school before going on the road with a trainer, if I recall correctly.
