I was told that anytime something gets hung up between the oil pump drive gear and the crankshaft gear it will almost always break the block in that spot.
In this case I know what it was... several months ago the flange portion of one of the air compressor mounting studs sheared off and fell down into the front cover. It probably broke the block right away but it took all this time for the oil pump case to get tired of hanging on one bolt and break open.
I'm just glad this was an option, otherwise I'd be building an engine right now.
