NZ had both private hospitals and health insurance if you wanted - or government hospital networks.

Anything non life threatening - you waited, typically 6 months. I had tonsils out at age 22. Free.

Car wreck - heart attack etc - straight in. Dad got nailed last year in that wreck - punctured lung, 11 broken ribs - no cost.

You have your choice. But - cigarettes are $250/carton, and a 750ml Jack Daniels will be $50, thank you. All tax proceeds to health.

Vehicle registration is expensive, inspections are very thorough - OSHA premiums are high and punitive for offenders. All into the health system coffers.

They have it reasonably well figured out. But I don’t think it will ever work here - big medical has a strong grip on the current system.

I’m so stupid that it took my wife explaining to me that you had to pay to have a baby here, and a heart attack might run you $100,000 without insurance.

Took me 6 months to fully grasp.

Rocky Mountain Peach Company.....every year there are several reefer loads of peaches brought in to this area to be sold by the case. They are the absolute best peaches I've ever eaten. We've bought some every year since 2012 and had a full case waiting on me when I rolled in Thrusday.....man they are good! @1951 ford and @Steve from hutch do you all get them down your way? I've heard you buy the "territory" to sell within....not sure the exact deal though.

I'm not sure if it's the same company, but there's a group that sets up at the Amish church south of town selling peaches out of a reefer.

@MACK E-6 - you can delete or shift this one, I don’t want to spark political conversation. But I spent 29 years there before 15 years here, so I can offer an opinion on the difference.

I’m not a fan of welfare. Should be a means to an end, not an ongoing thing.

Gretchen likes birds. I feed the birds, she is happy, I clean the poop off the deck and the pickup. (The cats get a feed occasionally too.)

If I get sick of cleaning poop off the pick up - I stop feeding the birds. They leave.

    That’s how I view welfare.

Healthcare - When I’m sick - I’m miserable and unproductive. I’m reasonably healthy so this is rare. But - I know pain and discomfort, ailments I’d never wish upon another.

Here, they use the term ‘healthcare as a right ‘ - it’s a polarizing statement whenever the issue is raised.

Whether it’s my family, your family, neighbors - I hate seeing anybody in pain. From a broken leg to terminal cancer. If I actually had a say in where my tax dollars go, it’d all go to little Johnny with leukemia or Mrs Johnston with cancer. Illegals can be patched up, stabilized in comfort and deported.

We’ve been through it with Gretchen’s sister, and her Dad, and the current system just sucks. Sucks people dry, into bankruptcy, into the grave. And there’s better ways of doing it. But I doubt it’ll change.

Sorry @stwik - I see simple ‘cut and paste’ things posted that are based in misinformation and spread by the unwitting every day, and it bothers me.

And that’s the point— visits to the Doc should be rare, only when your incapacitated — other than that, tough it out. Stop feeding beast and it will go find somewhere else to feed and the rest of us can get back to life and stop having to clean up the ####
