2009 Napier shootings - Wikipedia
Last for the evening.
Those of you with Netflix - search 'New Zealand Movies' - or 'True Crimes' - if you have an hour spare if you're inclined. There's several stories in there, but one popped out at me I'd forgotten. It's not much of a big deal body count wise, but was a huge deal at the time. The NZ police are unarmed, a few squad cars have shotguns and rifles in the trunk - but they're always back at base. The equivalent of SWAT had to be called in, and with little experience, Jan had them on the backfoot the whole time.
The docu-movie produced was shot on scene. I lived 4 houses up the street, in 51 Chaucer Rd South. I lived there with Mum after the divorce and helped out before she left town when I was 17. I lived in the 8 by 14 sleepout that can be seen in the film from the north based cordon setup after the shooting began. Same mailbox - everything.
I knew Jan Molenaars brothers - Pete the drummer, and Joe who killed himself. I never knew Jan lived there, and it occurred 5 years after I had moved over here. I also had a run in with Len Snee, the officer killed, in my youth. Fair cop.
Basically, it started with a warrant to search for weed - he grew it in the basement, most of us did, and there was undue focus on him because of his stand against the local Black Power and Mongrel Mob from his belief that the local PD was not addressing their production and sale of methamphetamine - which his brother had tangled with and subsequently committed suicide.
He came back to the house after walking his dog to find the cops there - and lost his ####. Once he'd started, I think he felt there was no end.
I knew the people, and I had to watch the media take on the story, knowing at least some of the family and background. And was thus disgusted with the media. He was well prepared to stand his ground over his line in the sand - multiple firearms and incendiary devices were found. Jans' funeral was attended by many, as many knew the whole story.
Anyhow - it's a good watch if you have some time, and turn on the subtitles - because they kinda talk funny.
