When I was 15 I could do shoes on a tridem trailer in about 35-40 minutes an axle. That's trailer in the door to trailer rolling out the door. Easy peasy.

Something as important as breaks and you're thinking of letting T/A do it?
I would say that's the definition of crazy.. :)

This might be a dumb question, but is there a liability issue in doing your brakes should an accident happen and it ends up in a court room? I could see the questioning going something like "Mr. Truck Driver, you stated you replaced the shoes and drums on your truck. What mechanical qualifications or certifications do you have?"

Brakes are very easy to do yourself, once you get the wheels off. $200 per axle is a fair price. Plus cost of drums if needed. $85- $175 each. Might want to bring your own drums to the T/A, they’ll rob you blind. It can turn into a $2000 job quick, with all new s cam bushings, labor , and clean up supplies, Lol. Beware of the Truckstop $100 per wheel special. They’ll get you good!!!

The guy at the TA doesn't have any qualifications either tho I can see your concern about the liability aspect of it.
You sir are correct, the hardest part of the job is jacking the truck up and getting the wheels off. People whack you on drums because of the minimum you need to buy. I used to buy two pallets at a time and sell them at cost to other shops just to keep the price down. Drums for some reason seem to be the hardest part to come across at a decent price wholesale.

$75 for shoes w hardware kit
$100 for drum. Less than $200 per side if you do it yourself
