Do you currently own a truck now?
Are you experienced in the biz?
How long you been driving?
I ask these questions because you are making a huge investment in troubled times- Or I should say ,Subpar times.
If you have $150,000 cash(or more).....And you Earned it the old fashioned way with Hard work and savings.......There's much Better return on putting that money to work other than buying a truck At the present time....
Now..If you were just "Given" that money through an inheritance,Lottery winner, Rich family etc...I'd say- Go spend away at your nearest "New Truck" Store as they call em today.
Last thing I EVER want to read about or Hear,Is a guy saved up for half his life to buy a truck,Then Fell down hard........Seen adult men Fall apart and actually cry when they Lost the Battle.
Worse than losing a mortgage.

Never been an o\o this then will be my first truck
Trucking is all I know. I looked into doing other things like a bbq joint or even truck but just switching careers like that scared the hell out of me. Such a huge risk. I understand trucking is a huge risk especially with rates so low as everyone says they are now But I'm making it as low risk as I can. Zero debt. No truck payment. New or newish truck so no huge break down costs Yes new trucks break down. But it's less chance less risk and warranty covers most.
Money I earned. I'm only dumping half of it into the trucking business 1/4 of it is to real estate. 1/4 stays in savings.
I was lucky enough to buy a house in 2008. Home price has since tripled. My wife and I dream is to move out of California. So were selling the house and moving to Texas or Tennessee. So the house and savings is where the money is coming fromx1Heavy, FoolsErrand and FlaSwampRat Thank this. -
It isn't just in house financing either, even being the originator for Paccar Financial or other reputable lenders the dealer still makes more selling the financing than the truck.
There are three profit centers in vehicle dealerships. Financing (includes warranties, insurance products and supplements), service department and parts department, in that order. Selling the actual truck is just to get folks in the door. -
Look at the truck. Really look at it good. Do your due dilligence. Use whatever you find wrong as leverage. Might be more attractive to a sales guy to have the noted issues fixed than to take less than asking price. My old man would always have the dealer swap his rigging over to the new truck as a condition of sale. Usually that's a $3-4k bill.
x1Heavy and FlaSwampRat Thank this. -
I have been shopping the last few months, been a bit more of small market for my search, I need a drop axle tractor. None of them would drop more then a few thousand, the one, I finally did purchase, was a consignment rig, not up for sale long enough to even budge a dollar on that one.

No wife or kids. A 3500 mile week is a good week. A 3000 mile week is acceptable. 2500 mile weeks are garbage and I will be in a foul mood if I get one.
I have only ever managed a single 4000 paid mile week, but my truck is governed at 67 until I pay it off, so all the planets and moons have to be in the right alignment to make a 4000 mile week happen. -
Hard to believe this was just a couple years ago? They could not give them away.
Yes that included FET.
I almost bought a brand new Volvo for $99,900?
Brand new glider Freightliner I looked at was $98k. -
And yes time off is the best thing evar!!! The logs were another matter.Farmerbob1 Thanks this.
