    §392.3 Ill or fatigued operator.
No driver shall operate a commercial motor vehicle, and a motor carrier shall not require or permit a driver to operate a commercial motor vehicle, while the driver’s ability or alertness is so impaired, or so likely to become impaired, through fatigue, illness, or any other cause, as to make it unsafe for him/her to begin or continue to operate the commercial motor vehicle. However, in a case of grave emergency where the hazard to occupants of the commercial motor vehicle or other users of the highway would be increased by compliance with this section, the driver may continue to operate the commercial motor vehicle to the nearest place at which that hazard is removed.

I had the same problem last year and i had taken all the tylenol and absoule I could take. I called dispatched told them I had to go to the ER. It was no problem just told me to let them know how it went and what they prescribed. Remember its a job and your the most important thing on the truck. I appreciate people who remember that and people have to be remind of that.

Heh, I might have dodged a bullet thanks to night/weekend's total incompetence. But I put in my resignation this morning. They said give them two more weeks then they'll route me though the Roanoke Terminal to surrender the truck.

Thing is I already cleaned it out, so I had to rush home and re-pack about 2 weeks worth of clothes.

Ora-jel extra strength works to hold off some of the pain with bad toothaches. You can find this at CVS/Walgreen's/Wal-mart. I've used it to get me to the dentist and I've had some really bad tooth problems (I broke a tooth in a bike accident and it's been downhill since then)

Sorry to hear about this situation, it seems that some people really don't care about others. It's all too common these days to just be a number to a company.

if a trucking company denied me medical treatment, i would tell them to bend over so i could drive that truck straight up their ###. If i owned a company and one of my drivers needed medical attention, i would tell him to go whereever asap to get the help he needed screw the load or shippers. human life is more important than any truck, load, or amount of money.

Well congrats on moving on but I would like to give kudos for not abandoning your truck, and putting in your two weeks notice. Good luck and let us know where off too next.

In my experience the best QC is "Unable to pickup and deliver safe and legal" the weekend crew is stopped in their tracks, the regular crew slows way down and gets the whole story. I've not had call to use it for medical issues, but on other occasions is has allowed me to be really heard. Hope you find a new gig soon.

Just to clarify this whole situation:

1.) I let them know I had a problem, and I'd need to go to the dentist.
2.) because I was heading to the north east (home base) I sugested I go to the same dentist I'd been going to. So as not to have to start a new file with some other doctor
3.) They told me this would be okay.

Now, if at anytime they would have had a problem with this I would have gone to the NEAREST AVAILABLE DENTIST. Just to make this clear to any crazy noobs out there. I did not expect to start WW3 over getting me 800 home deadhead. Nor was I in any MAJOR pain at any time. (more like a persistant itch, at least untill I had a hot cup of coffee on the 3rd day) I'm not stupid, if I needed serious medical attention they could have retrieved their truck from the ambulance bay of the nearest ER.

So it was one lousy tooth and now it's gone. No pain, no fuss.

Now,, here's the nut of the situation and why I'm REALLY quitting:

My wife is expecting in February. I expect the next 6 months will be an endless list of "honey-do's", not only from her, but for myself as well. There are things *I* need to put in order before the kid arrives. And that's why I don't have the luxury of wasting time sitting by the side of the road because I'm "out of hours" anymore.

Frankly, the more I think about it, the more than fair USA has been to me, and I'd like to leave on fairly good terms with them.

I realize that there are many jadded and burned truckers out there on this board. But there are also a lot of hot-headed youngsters and novices looking for information. So I'm going to try to keep this as balanced and fair as I can.

    In summery:

Realizing that this job cannot get me home on short notice for medical emergencies, made me re-prioritize whether or not I can do this job at this time in my life.

    And that,,, should be that.
