perfect, you'll get many years out of that 88" with the updates done. enjoy the ride man! mods are cheap and plentiful for that motor. a couple grand and it will outrun anything the MOCO currently offers.WesternPlains, lovesthedrive and FlaSwampRat Thank this.

the issue was the material the stock spring tensioner shoes were made from. they can disintegrate and plug off oil journals inside the engine. no oil...kaboom. new engine. the easy fix is very inexpensive and simple, Cyco makes a shoe made from nylon that will last a hundred thousand miles easily, the stock ones were lucky to make 50,000 miles, a lot of them failed at less than 30,000.
the next upgrade is a little more pricey, but a bulletproof repair, the tensioner system is upgraded from spring tension to hydraulic, as well as different shoe material. HD did this to all twin cam engines starting in 2007.
the most expensive and trouble free upgrade is to go with gear driven cams, but can only be done if crankshaft runout is below a certain spec. they make a cool sound with the gear driven cams too...kinda like a supercharger whirring sound.WesternPlains, lovesthedrive and FlaSwampRat Thank this. -
The local independent Harley-Davidson repair shop says they have removed a lot of the gear sets. Apparently they can be so loud it sounds like there's something wrong with the bikeWesternPlains, lovesthedrive and Troy_ Thank this.

that was the very reason HD didn't put them in stock, failed EPA engine noise requirements. if you can live with the noise, you'd never have to open your cam chest again for the life of the engine. I think they sound cool, but it's a $2000 upgrade. the hydraulic cam plate upgrade is the way to go IMOWesternPlains, lovesthedrive and FlaSwampRat Thank this.
