ARKANSAS DOT almost put me out of service

    Your lucky in Pennsylvania those 2 brakes out of adjustment would have put you out of service and over $600 in fines. They like writing brake out of adjustment tickets. All our new trucks have disc brakes , love them . They stop on a dime and DOT can’t get a measurement
    On them as mentioned earlier. Our trailers still have drum brakes though.

    Don’t ask me how, ask peoplenet, I got one once by pulling the parking brakes, got an instant call from safety.. well like 5 minutes later, told them to look at logs, I was parked, the guy said, “You must have pulled the buttons to hard.”

    True, and anyone pulled in for an inspection should make four or five full pressure brake applications, BEFORE SETTING THE BRAKES. Compounding air plus springs is not advised.

    You mean you pulled the trailer hand brake? If you did, they were just trying to make sure you weren’t intentionally trying to damage their trailer tires.

    Not when you are stopped.

    I was going to say, I usually park at the far end from the coop for a bit of walk, the brakes are stomped several times before DOT man gets to me or I go in.

    Its not good to put me in a truck that is alive with enforcement sensors. Just dig up a old iron tractor and forget about it for a while. it'll be fine. I miss the old days with the manual adjusters sometimes before the autos came along, she will let you know when you cannot stop. Under you go.

    Oh ok. Yeah that too. Never know who was working on that trailer before he acquired it. Half assed mechanics these days. Stay away from them and work on your own stuff. Good point amodelcat

    Not always true my friend. I had a few that a nice ratchet to them that still backed out. Once replacing them, you will notice that it takes a significant amount of force to ratchet it. Some will have no force at all when bad. Replace the bad ones that back off and never touch them again. Know your truck. If you have a used one, the. You don’t know the truck until you have rebuilt it

    I’ve never done it, but have been told, you can remove the button type locking mechanism and clean up the dried grease, check gear, If it’s stripped. Replace it, restores the self adjusting operation.
