Newb looking at buying dedicated route

    Hey all,
    I've had my cdl past 32 years, limited otr. Mostly dump, belly, lowboy, etc., all older equipment. Back in the day I ran I90 between Seattle and Spokane twice a week for an armored car company.

    A buddy of mine is retiring. He has a 16 t680 with 440k, 15 Utility 53' dry van. Runs a dedicated route to Cali. every week, home weekends. Leased on to a small 4 truck carrier. Route grosses about 220k past 5 years with a $1.80 all miles average.
    Cost is $80k.

    My house is paid for with no other bills at this time. $16k down, payment around $1400. $10k in start up money.

    Several things I'm considering. My experience, or lack there of. I do have confidence in my driving ability.
    Cost of buy in, seems high for the equipment, but there's the route to consider as well. Owner of company seems more then willing to teach me the ropes.

    Any thoughts appreciated.

    You are buying the truck, trailer and the route for $80k. Do you get a contract for this route. What happens if the carrier looses the route a week after you start.

    No contract, they have had the route since 2013. I see your point.

    That is a high price for that equipment. I don't know the dry van world. But reading on here your per mile income seems low for the states you would be running.
    Oregon WDT is 20 cents per mile. Fuel price is higher on the west coast.

    You really need to see all the costs.
    You are buying a company driver job and taking all the risk.
    Not surprised your friend is getting out of it.
    Ask your friend to show you the ugly numbers not just the glitter.

    I would not do it.

    I have his profit loss statements as well as tax returns for the last 5 years. Averages 80k profit, 78k average to irs.

    What is this? He paid irs $78k a year?

    No, that's his claimed income after deductions. Some years less due to depreciating equipment.

    It might work out fine if it goes as planned, but what's your plan if it doesn't? If you dont get on with the new firm, lose the contract, whatever ?

    On the face of it I reckon it might well have legs, but I say hope for the best and plan for the worst.

    I’d want to see all the numbers.

    Does he have maintenance records for the truck? I’d at least have it inspected and pull an oil sample - post results here for advice.

    $1.80 is ok, nothing to scream about. If it’s a dedicated deal then there’s little room for improvement.

    Kinda just buying a job really. The package deal approach is attractive, but I dunno.

    122,000 miles a year? About 2300 miles a week?

    I think you could get an LTL (ODFL) gig that would actually pay better.

    Unless you really want to do the independent thing,
