The smell of oil is kind of like the smell of a woman's V. You'll know if it doesn't smell right

Load them heavy, run them hard.

Only way to break in a new build.

My pickup motor has a reputation for being an oil eater but nearly 50k klms on it and it hasn't eaten a drop so far..

Ran it hard from 500 klms. Loaded a crlar trailer heavy and found the biggest hills we had to work it..

    So far, so good.

Never had a fresh build on a truck to play with tho.

Troy_, WesternPlains and Rideandrepair Thank this.

I concede, idling is out on a truck engine.

That computer wont let it run any harder.
Me and another guy both got brand new trucks when at the same company.
First week, I locked cruise on 57. Next week I went to 65.
    Third to 70.
He started from day one “Break it in hard it’ll pull!”
His has been in shop countless times.
The one I used to drive now has over 1.2 million, never been rebuilt.
His had an inframe at 700k and now has an engine out of a wreck because he ran it foot on floor and melted it going up a mountain.

My truck has 871,288 on it, no rebuild or inframe.
When I had the front seal fixed, it was time (250k ish) miles so I also had an overhead done.
Thats it on this little Cummins engine

I guess I could run the blowby tube into the Truck, That’s a great idea. I’ve got it ran back near the fifth wheel now. Back to the drawing board I go.

There's a difference in running an engine like youre going to from the start and abusing an engine. Ive got 16k on the rebuild and it pulls like a freight train and is only set at 450hp. But I know how not to abuse it 99% of the time.

You’re just smelling for any difference. Coolant? Perhaps too much of a diesel smell? Anything.
It also should burn some oil at first. Expect it.
